Subject: Parking Brake (implode) IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone. I was just wondering if anyone has had the same problem that I ran into last night. I have a 2003 Dak Sxt 4x4 v6 manual tranny, and last night I was driving home from work and I kept hearing some weird clanking and rattling from what sounded like the rear end. I got home and put it on jack stands and got under it with the flashlight. Found nothing until I put it in gear, engine running and just let the idle move the rear tires. Found the problem immediately and could tell where it was coming from.
So I took apart the rear brakes, I have all wheel discs, so the parking brake is the inside drum mechanism, which works pretty much the same as regular drum brakes. Anyways I take off the rotor/drum and find that the adjusting screw is mangled, springs are torn and smashed, the shoes are literally bare to the metal like the pad just peeled off. It looked as if the pads on the shoes just cracked and fell off, there was no sign of them scraping off or anything. Long story shorter, Im now running without an E-brake because the pads are 75.00 at autozone and 154.00 at the dealer, along with the hardware kit which is another 30 bucks. Any help is appreciated, maybe a good deal on some parts???
Thanks
Justin

Message: No problem here, but I've got an automatic like most. And we dont' use a P-brake as often. That's my guess. And even on other vehicles that I used the ebrake on all the time (even using the ebrake to corner on slippery roads), I've never had a situation like yours. Sounds like a bad shoe.

Message: If it was the shoes, then it must have been the set, because both shoes on the passenger side were completely torn to sh**. Im just wondering about replacements, if there is anything better or aftermarket out there.

Message: Yea, Rockauto was still about 60 bucks for the pair of shoes after shipping, might as well get em right away for 10 bucks more from the local auto parts store. Still, 70 bucks for a couple of brake shoes? They are virtually the same thing as regular drum shoes!!!

Message: Looks like those prices are all in the ball park. Summit shows EBC pads for $64. Pick a good brand and you will get what you pay for. The only reason I can think of for higher rear brake pads is the relative lack of demand compared to front pads. It's about 2-3 to 1.
Manuals usually have fewer problems with the e-brake because they are use more frequently. On autos the tend to freeze up because they are neglected and used infrequently. If you frequently put it gear and rarely use the parking brake you will experience the same thing. Exercise it frequently and follow maintenance schedule.

Message: Just a thought, you could try a junk yard to get the hard ware and the new shoes at a parts store. If you found a truck with an auto, maybe even the shoes could be used, its not like the parking brake shoes are being used all the time, unless you use the E-brake to stop a lot.
Just a suggestion.
Good Luck

Message: N56629, yes I agree that folks with auto rarely use the ebrake, but it's not the pads that are the problem, it's just the cables.

Message: Yea, I have the manual tranny and use the parking brake all the time, I park on an inclined driveway so I don't like to just leave it in gear. It just seems like there was some kind of defect in the pad to just crack and crumble and fall apart like that. I ended up just buying them from Autozone, I had a 20 dollar credit from spending 20 bucks 5 times in 6 months anyways so I used it!! Thanks guys!

Message: Yup, that is exactly what happened, except I never heard a single clunk, just scraping and many clunks until I checked it out and all of the puzzle peices of the brake pad came out! Its fixed now tho and all is well with the dakota, just waitin on those 37's to come in so I can put in my solid axle!! :)

Message: Hi all, Great forum, been here a lot with my 03 Dakota 4x4.I have had a sim problem. Had a metal sliding sound from ?? couldn't tell. Thought my bearings(weak design parts)were going bad. While driving it seemed to lock up for a split second. hadn't a clue. After doing a front rotor & pad change it was still there. Pulled the rears and had a handful of parts fall out in my hand. As the mini drum brake (Parking Brake)seems to self adjust, rub a bit until the Pads fall off the rivets. Now all that metal was slinging around in there, that was the sound. However it seems that a fragment would wedge, lock the wheel for a split second. I think (could be wrong)when the rear stopped turning the anti lock would cause the fronts to respond also. This would give the feel of a bearing seizure. You can get the Pads at Ebay for $25-30 and the small parts replacement for another $20+-. Changing was a throwback to the old days of drums, except tiny sized. Also check your cables, they wear at a sharp bend by the rear tire, crack, moisture, rust, lockup. They hold when activated but does not release well. Which means longer pad rubbing. I seldom use my parking brake so I was shocked that the Pads wore off to rivets. Hope this helps out. Always Check these pesky things when you change your rear pads, which I know seldom wear out on me. Best of luck to you all. Tigereyefire
