Subject: 4.7 poor MPG
IP: Logged

Message:
I just purchased a 2003 Dakota Quad Cab with the 4.7 Magnum engine. Over the past 2 weeks I have avaeraged between 12.5 and 13.9 MPG on combined highway and city driving. This seems really low.
I just got rid of a Jeep with 5.9 that got 15 mpg.

Ids this normal for this truck or is there something I need to get done to it. I already changed the plus and a coil on the #2 plug.

Thanks for your help.

I bought an 02 Dak Quad 4.7 new. It now has 102k miles on it. I've always averaged 16.5-17 mpg for stop and go traffic and right about 22 mpg highway with the cruise locked in at about 63-64mph.

Has 96,000 miles,,,,I just had it checked out by my local mechanic because the check engine light came on after sputtering. He said it read that the coil was bad on the # 2 plug. Replced it as well as all the plugs while he was in there. Everything else seemed to check out.
Thanks for any info you can give.

O2 senors should be changed at 60k. This can affect mileage.

a lot of things affect mileage. proper tire size, inflation and alignment for sure. driving habits is another.

just because it has 96k does not necessarily mean that the O2's need to be changed. my '00 has the original O2 and still gets the same good mileage it got when new.

either a good scantool or a laptop w/ the proper setup to read all sensor input is the way to check all the sensors out for sure.

Good point about tire size. The PCM is programmed for a 27.75" tire height for a 4x2 truck (the base size is 235/75/15). If you have larger tires and have not corrected the PCM's interpretation of tire rotations per mile your odometer will show less distance traveled than actual distance(and the speed will show slower, too).

If this is the case, this could explain why you seem to be getting very poor MPG.

You didn't state whether you have a 4x2 or 4x4, or your tire size. What are they?

What's your left foot doing?

Hey daddio you have a 3.9 it is a lot more forgiving than the 4.7. Look at the maint schedule o2s at 60k. Just do it.

I get the same as Les, with my '03 AWD 4.7L automatic with 126000 kms. When towing my 24' travel trailer(6000 lbs) I get about 10-12mpg, and there are lots of hills here in BC. George, forget the tire pressure, they would have to be flat to make that much difference in the fuel mileage. You may want to check if your brakes are sticking. You could possibly have a bad wheel bearing, but would probably notice that right away. This may sound far fetched, but go back to the dealer and ask them to update the computer software for a high mileage dakota, not a brand new one. I've heard this works on Chevys with over 100K kms. Also, get a K&N cold air intake, it's gonna give you 2-3 mpg more and sounds better too. The stock intake is wayyyy too restrictive and the only reason they make it like that is to make it quieter. While you're at it, put a new MAF sensor in it. If all this helps, buy me dinner, I like lobster, lol.

Drakewn,
No MAF sensor in the dodges. You must really be texastodd, spreading this bull. I doubt that your brakes are dragging, 03s had better brake design. The stock intake is fine. Have you thought about doing a seafoam treatment. It can help.

Ummm, sorry to say, but there is a little sensor in the intake of my 4.7 and while maybe it's not called MAF, it's something similar. Also, I am not texastod. In fact I'm from BC Canada. And yes my 4 wheel discs are great, maybe George has a problem with his. The stock intake on ANY vehicle is fine, but who wants fine? Not me.

12.5 to 13.9 is not unusual for a QC with 4.7. The '03 EPA is 13 & 17 for the 4x4 - 1 mpg better for the 2by. Remember with the Dak you're hauling around about 4500 lb of sheetmetal to be able to haul 1500 lb of stuff. I'm sure the Jeep was lighter. It's not a little Nissan or Toyota, its a half-ton in a skinny body. Hills will kill your mpg. Also "new truck foot" or "new muffler foot" will hurt mpg as well. "Winter gas " is also a mpg killer with the 4.7. New plugs and a K&N drop-in will help a bit.
You didn't say what tranny or drive you had - always helps to answer a question in a post.

%uck you amsoil troll! When I fist got my 2002 qc 4.7 I got worse milage, I would say about 10 or 12 mpg no matter what. I took it to the dealer and they did nothing for a whole day with the truck and then tried to load me up on E.P.A. standards being this and that. One night I pulled in to a gas station to wash my windows and left the truck running and heard a hissing sound from under the hood. It was a dry rotted vacuum line. Fixxed that and got 20 mpgs on the freeway. I also had auto with a 3.55 rear end. no 4x4.

drakewn,

NICE pics, nice Dak, Nice travel trailer, NICE place!

That your helocopter too?

PS- I don't think you'll see 2-3 mpg better with a K&N FIPK- EVER! You're right about a louder sound though. Actually, the stock 4.7 air intake, pulling it from the right fenderwell, which comes from the windshield cowl, is pretty good. An older stock tupe filter, clogged some, can definitely limit flow some to be noticable.

Is your area of cannuck near Wisconsin?
