Message: The repair manual tells you to fill it with gear oil to the bottom of the filler hole. You would do the same regardless which cover is on there. As far as lube...depends on what you believe. Some will tell you to spend the extra cash and get the hi-dollar synthetic stuff, while others say the run-of-the-mill gear oil at any auto-parts or big box store is just fine. Either will lube the gears.

Message: That's not necessarily always true guys. I had a Dana 60 built for my 96 Dakota and the hole on the cover (high capacity with bearing cap support) sits slightly higher than that of a stock D60 cover. If I fill the rear to just below the fill hole, I get some seepage from the axle seals once the axle temps rise when driving. After replacing the seals twice, DTS told me I was over filling the rear. When I filled it with just the amount the documentation for the cover listed, the seepage stopped.
What does your cover list as a capacity?
