Subject: floorboard rust hole fix?? IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I have a 5 in diameter hole in my drivers side floorboard. It doesnt seem rust around the hole, so I would like to fix it. What is the best material to use? What would you use to keep the material on? Glue, weld, rivets...? Thanks!
Nick

Message: Keeping a beater alive happens to be a speciality of mine. Get some 1/2" plywood and some caulk. Cut the plywood to the size of your floor board use a stink load of caulk. I mean how much more life are you hopin' to get out of it?

Message: mig weld or braze a piece of steel to the floor plan. When you are finished seal the inside seam with caulk. Spray paint on the inside and outside of the steel plate.

Message: I plan on keeping it a long time. The body is good except for that rust hole, its got a different engine, and the tranny has over 230,000 miles, and it still works!!!

Message: I planned on keeping my 1979 Ford Fiesta a long time too. It was a rat box-I did develop the habit of wearing my seat belt. 40+ mpg started on the first crank at -22 degrees good car till the thermostat went out and I was too much of an idiot to realize it then. I was on my way to a Santa gig. OK picture a santa hitch hiking in the corn fields of Northern llinois holding a set of licence plates. (the good thing about beaters when they die take off the plates walk away and don't look back). But if hadn't walked away I never would have found my 1970 VW bus....but that's another story......

P.S. You'd be surprised how easy it is to get a ride when you're dressed like santa. But this was December 20th. If it was March 18th that would be another thing.

Message: just cut the hole sqaure with a grinder preferably and buff away rust with a buffer wheel and take the same thickness of metal and weld it even (flesh on top and bottom need two people or a jack) then rhino line the bottom and repaint the top.

Message: When you cut away the rust and go to weld the new piece in, spot weld every inch or so and when you are finished, tar or seal it on top and bottom. If you weld it in solid you will be doing it again in a year. It has to be able to move a little.

Message: Why are you responding to a 4 year old post ? Did you not notice the sarcasm in the last post I made under the original poster's name ? How gullible are you ?
