In a bit of a pickle here I have an 04 dak 3.7 w/ 5 speed. I romped on it from a roll in 1st after a stoplight to get away from an idiot, smoked the tires on the 1-2 shift and spun through most of 2nd.. That's where the fun stopped, tried to shift into 3rd and the stick didn't want to go with a nasty grind. I tried the other gears and same thing... Momentum got me to the next stoplight about 1/2 mile away still in neutral..

Came to the light and o'fug can't get into any gears without grinding. Finally got it to get into gear and get going (dumb luck, I was able to roll enough to get going.) Managed to shift into 2nd with an obnoxious grind and luckily I was close enough to home at this point to get there without any full stops.

Clutch fluid looks fine. In my garage I can start the truck in neutral but get lots of grinding when I try to get into any gear. Seems that I can get into any gear without the engine running. Starting in any gear gives a lurch forward or back and engine dies.. pedal feels fine, does this sound like the clutch???

Rambling I know, but I'm frustrated and on about the 5th beer now. :)

Engine off. Put in gear. Hold down clutch pedal. Try to start engine.
If it lurches, the clutch is not releasing.

sounds about right that's what it's doing... Any tricks to get the fugger to release? I've never played the clutch game before so don't even know where to begin.

dako,

Definitely sounds like the clutch and not engaging issue. REALLY weard that it would do it just from getting a second gear scratch though. (Mine would have went years ago). But I understand, weard things DO happen.

It's either the hydrollic system not working properly as in pushing the piston in the slave cylinder to push the lever, that pushed the pressure plate, that lets the clutch 'slip'.
Or. it's the pressure plste had broken somehow. It's rare, but I've seen it.

Have someone get under your truck, with everything off, and have them see if the slave cylinder is moving the plunger while you depress and let off the clutch. Start from there.

Good luck and let us know what's happened. Problems and repairs like this always help others.

If you race around or ride your clutch alot it might be time to replace the clutch plate.

How many miles are on your truck?

Is this your first stick?

How old are you? (This is not supposed to be a demeaning questions, younger drivers tend to go through clutches quicker. We all tend to learn the hard way.)

If you end up having to drop your tranny your going to want to replace a few things that way you wont have to be bothered by this for awhile. I'm not sure and you'll want to ask around here, but there might be some good aftermarket clutches for your truck.

Good Luck

Just got done dropping the tranny and it's amazing more serious damage wasn't done. My pressure plate is in 3 pieces, and one of the springs had snapped off and was wedged into the flywheel!

I've been driving sticks for more than 30 years now and have never owned an automatic. The truck only has about 90k on it, but I've only had it about a month so the previous owner must have beat the hell out of it.

Can't complain much, even with the $600 I'm spending at the parts store today for a replacement clutch, flywheel, slave, and tranny mount I have less than $2300 into this truck...

I told you it was the pressure plate!

Glad you found it and got it fixed.

Good to here you got er all fixed. Did the job go fairly smoothly? I haven't replaced a clutch in awhile, just wondering what its going to be like for my dakota. Its the same set up as yours. Last one I replaced was out of an 89' toy, pretty simple.

I'm beginning to get a squeak when I press in my clutch, its probably dust on the bearing (forgot the correct terminology). Anybody think this is going to be an issue? or just an annoyance?
