Message: My truck started overheating shortly before X-Mas. Figured it was radiator cap so replaced it. Bled air. Seemed OK. A week or so later it started again after replacing upper hose. Re-bled. OK for awhile. After a long highway trip it overheated again. Bled it for about 30 minutes. All seemed OK until today... again. 45 min. drive home at highway speeds. Stop at burger drive thru, heat starts rising.... notice if I rev engine dash lights get brighter...
Turn up heat and lower temp. Turn down heat and it's OK for a few minutes and starts heating up again... turn up heat... by this time food comes. get back on road and temp goes back to normal...
I'm losing my mind... HELP!!!

Symptoms indicate THERMOSTAT.

Message: I'm not so sure about that. If it was the thermostat, then why would temp go down with the heater being turned up ? The thermostat would still be blocking the flow. I'd consider that one possibility, but I don't think the symptoms indicate the thermostat over other possibilities. I don't think we can rule out a loose fan belt, worn impellor, or maybe even a partially clogged radiator. Since it gets better at cruising speed, I'd think the most likely would be the belt, impellor, or a partially opening thermostat. But you should also look at why you have to keep bleeding it.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Does your engine fan engage as the temperature begins to overheat? If not then you might want to do some reading about the viscous fan clutch because yours might be shot:
http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1c/bl511c.htm
Basically, while in motion on the highway the moving airflow is going to help keep down some overheating issues. But while stopped the fan isn't going to turn at all to force air through the radiator.
Turning on the heat in the cabin is going to help pull some heat out of the coolant via the heater core. (Basically a small radiator which the blower motor forces cabin air through.) Much like your normal fan would do for the radiator when working correctly.
Good luck & hope this proves to be helpful!

Message: Brandofamily, does your truck have the electric fan as well? If it does, you would definitely hear it kick in when the temps go up. Maybe a blown fuse for the fan?

Message: Sorry for not getting back to this thread quicker... looks like a blown head gasket or warped head.... possible bearing damage due to coolant in oil... life sucks right now:(
