There was a leak coming from the differential, looked on this forum to see what the problem could be. I found many posts about that it was probably the pinion seal(leak was coming from the front of the differential out of the seal hitting the driveshaft\companion flange bolts and spraying all over the underside of the truck).

I took it to the dealer and said the pinion seal is leaking, they gave me some lame story about the differential housing weld is broken and you need to put a whole new backend in and it would cost around 4,000 dollars! They also gave me the option to go find a backend from another junked truck but it would still cost over a grand for them to put it in.

Anyways, I replaced the seal myself put a small dent in the seal housing and didn't use a torque wrench so it still leaked.

I started over with another seal and bought the proper torque wrench. I installed the seal properly and torqued the pinion nut properly
285 N·m (210 ft. lbs.) and now it doesn't leak and have driven 1000 miles now with no problems, no leaks.

So
Pinion seal x 2 = $24.00
250 ft. lb Torque wrench = $119.00
Gear Oil from pepboys = $11.00

total = $154.00 to do it myself.

Black - clearcoat paint is coming off like a sunburn. Truck has been back and forth between Socal and Northern AZ for the last 8 years. Runs great just ugly.

Ias,

NICE JOB!!

Hopefully others will benefit from your post as well.

Don't you love it when they tell a guy, BS about the repair, etc? Think how they screw wround women! If I had a job like that, I couldn't sleep at night, worrying about how I was screwing others around!

Hope it continues to stay dry!
Way to DIY!

Drive it like its paid for!

That's what this great site is all about! Just
think how many people get raked over the coals
at stealerships for work that doesn't need to be
done at all..

Great job, ias600!!

ias600 - How long did it take you to do this? Other than the first bad attempt, did you have any issues? My '01 is leaking and I need to replace the seal, but for now, I just make sure the rear is full.
