Subject: Electric door locks and fobs.... IP: Logged
Message: Yesterday,
When I used my fob, my driver door didn't unlock, everything else did.
I've had my door panels off a few times putting new speakers in. I'm hoping that a wire or plug is loose and that's the problem. I'll take off the panel soon and investigate.
I found this nice site, with alot of other 'how they works' also:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/power-door-lock.htm/printable
I"ve seen posts on this before, and if it's the accuator, how hard and about how much for just the one, doing it myself?
TIA

Message: can't be that hard to change. as far as price, i looked at a couple of online parts places like rockauto.com and nobody lists it. probably need to call a dealer.
now i know why i don't want any p/w or p/l in my truck.
good luck.

Message: If the actuator is bad, Dodge only sells the actuator and door latch mechanism as an assembly. I have no idea what their price is but I can guess it's expensive. You could mount an aftermarket door lock actuator in the lower part of the door cavity and connect it to the door lock lever on the door latch mechanism. Pep Boys is the only parts store I have seen that carries aftermarket door lock actuators, and they sell them for about 10 or 15 bucks each. You can just leave the OE actuator in place but cut out the connecting rod that goes to the bottom of the lock mechanism so you can bend the rod on the aftermarket actuator into the hole to operate the lock lever. Or you can use the hardware they send with the new one and connect it further up on the door lock rod in the door cavity.
My truck does not have OE electric door locks but I installed door lock actuators in both doors and interfaced them with a Viper alarm. They work great and have been in place nearly 3 years. You can also buy door lock actuators at any good car audio/alarm shop, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.
This sounds like a problem in that particular door, not with the keyless entry system itself. I have heard of other Dakota owners having problems or failures with the OE actuators, but it's not that common. You have the right idea by checking the wiring inside the door first though. If you need a new one, aftermarket is probably going to be a lot cheaper. All you have to do is connect the 2 wires on the new actuator to the existing 2 wires going to the OE actuator. It's still just a simple 2 wire reverse polarity system. If the lock works backwards, just reverse your connections.

Message: Thanks jimmy,
Just the kind of advice I needed.
But, I guess the planets are back in alignment,
because this morning it works fine again, and I haven't done anything yet! Go figure.
Again, thanks for the advice, it may quit working again, and you gave some great pointers and advice.

Message: If it happens again-suspect the wiring were it passes from the body to the door. Years of flexing can break the strans inside the insulation. You know the song-now they work, now they don,t, now they do. Gremlins are fun.
