Subject: gas tank dimensions? IP: Logged
Message: What are the dimensions on the 20 and 22gal tanks? I just recently bought an '04 dakota and a fillup after the gas light came on only took 12 gallons... Just wondering if the previous owner slipped a small tank in on me. I'm a little cautious running it dry to find the size that way.

Message: could be he changed the fuel pump and/or the sending unit and didn't orient it properly. as far as dimensions, i have a 24 gallon on my '00 QC and that thing goes almost from the back of my front seat to about 6 inches from the rear axle.

Message: The QC's came with the larger gas tank as standard equipment.
My 02 QC also has 24 gallon tank.
Like Daddio said, it's huge, if you take a peek under you'll know it when you see it.

Message: I THOUGHT it was still 22 gal. though,
MIne usually keeps about 6 gallons when the light comes on, in my 24gal tank on my QC.
I'm fairly sure they like to keep several gallons in there still to keep the pump cooler.
Maybe, just maybe, the gadget at the gas station clicked off too early also, maybe?
Keep checking it out, and keep us posted.

Message: I believe the RC came with a 20 gallon tankl
The light is supposed to come on with 1/8 tank of fuel left. That would be around 2.5 gallons of fuel left in a 20 gallon tank. If the sender is going out or has been replaced and is not oriented correctly, you can get bad readings and show more or less fuel than you actually have.

Message: Dan M... it was on the internet so it must be true.
The window sticker off of my 01 reg cab says 22 gal.
The brochure for 01 states 22 reg and ext. and 24 for quad.
Maybe they were smaller in later years I don't know.

Message: Mystery solved... I was able to lookup the part number and discovered that it's the 20gal tank. So must be a matter of either the sender of the float being poorly adjusted. Guess I have one of those "special" trucks that might go 140 miles after the gas light comes on. ;)
