Subject: Trickle Charge Battery IP: Logged
Message: I'm thinking of purchasing a solar panel that plugs into the power outlet for my 04 Dodge Dakota to keep the battery charged. I'm curious if anybody has experienced any problems with doing this? The truck has an alarm system on it and sits for weeks at a time without being driven and I'm concerned about the battery being drawn down over time. Thanks in advance for the replies.

Message: The lighter socket on my 04's dash is switched.
Find an unswitched outlet, or connect it directly to the battery.

Message: Thanks for the reply. I have the 12v. socket just below the dash. Will the battery still take a charge if a solar panel is plugged into the 12v. socket?

Message: With the ignition key removed, does the socket have power?
If YES, then it'll work.
If NO, then it won't work.

Message: Thanks, tried it today. Socket does NOT have power when the ignition key is removed however the outlet doesn't work now even when the truck is running. I plugged the panel in for a few hours to test it out. Probably blew something. Lesson learned and some information for others on the board now.
