Does anyone know how to remove the little panel that holds the three buttons for temp, AC/heat, and fan speed?

Just pull straight back on the dash pannel and it will pop off no screws. Then there sould be 4 screws holding the heater contols on the dash itself.

This is for '97 to '00's

After removing the dash face you'll see the four screws CW mentions. If you remove these four screws, the whole heater assembly will come off with exception of the cable connections behind it (which looks very complicated). To see a picture of the "bare" heater cover click here

If you want to remove just the face of the heater controls, you'll need to remove the knobs first. You'll need to turn each knob so it's in the 12 o'clock position and firmly pull it off. The back of the knobs are keyed (you'll see what I mean after you get the first one off.

After the knobs are off, there are six tabs (three per side) that need to be pryed with a small screwdriver. once the tabs are loosened, the heater face comes right off.

Reassembly is done in reverse order.

Great answer; I had hoped to avoid removing the dash pad. Nothing is ever as simple as it looks when disassembling the inside of a car.
