Subject: Diff swap IP: Logged
Message: Hi I have a 2000 Dakota 4X4 4.7L 5Spd with an open diff in the back. Instead of putting in a Limited slip I was just going to find a diff in a junk yard with a factory one.
Although I know that that 2001's have disk brakes in the back. SO I am wondering if I can put a 2001 diff in my truck and still be able to stop without locking up the rear end? Would the ABS still work? Wether the proportioning valve and master cylinder are the same?
Any Help would be greatly apprechiated.
Thanks Jess

Message: Jess, remember you have a 4x4 and that means two
rear ends. Both MUST be the same gearing.
If you remove one from a bone yard make 100%
sure it has the same gearing as your old one
OR replace both front and rear.
I once bought a used jeep and it would not stay
in 4X4. It would SLAM and I mean SLAM back out.
I soon found out the jeep was in a front end wreck
and a used front end clip was installed.
Needless to say, I dumped the jeep the first
chance I got...

Message: Yeah, I already thought that would make a bad situation. I know it is 3.55 gears so I am sure I can find that diff. I am more concerned about hooking up my exsisting lines to disk brakes..

LSD was an available option in 2001. But, I looked at a lot of 4x4 trucks on the dealer lots that did not have it. Doesn't make sense to me either.

Message: Oie, You are right it is not until 2003 that they change to disk in the rear. I guess I will try to see if master cylinder and proportiong valve are the same for 00 and 03. Then maybe try an experiment.

Message: Disc and drum brakes generally require different volumes of brake fuid to operate. I definitely would not expect the parts to be the same.
