Subject: Transmission Problem? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys and girls,
I have a 1990 Dakota 3.9L 4WD with just shy of 100k miles on it. Starting a few weeks ago I started having a weird problem. After driving the truck a short distance (say 5 miles) and then parking for about an hour so, when I get back in the truck I can reverse just fine out of a parking spot but when I put it in D and apply the gas, the truck does not move for a second and then will suddenly lurch forward. I think its the transmission because if feels like an manual when you let the clutch out to fast, it kind of lurches several times. And then thats it. The truck drives normally like nothing happened.
I checked the transmission fluid which looked normal, though a little low (topped it up) and then drove it, parked it for about an hour and then still had the same problem.
Any ideas on whats causing this and whats involved in fixing it?

Do't put up with it. Get a Tacoma.

Message: Short of a tranny rebuild is first service the
tranny with new filter and fluid. If that doesn't
take care of the problem, well do what Jake said
or have tranny rebuilt B U T you'll be V E R Y
luckey to find anyone and I mean ANYONE that
knows how to rebuild one. It's a SAD fact but it's
true.
Good luck..

Message: Thanks guys. I appreciate the suggestion Jake. But for the price of a good used Tacoma I can replace the transmission in my Dodge about 3 times.
Radioman, thats the next step. I guess I'll drop the pan and replace the fluid and the filter and see if theres anything obviously wrong. Hopefully that fixes it since I don't have the tools, facilities or know-how to rebuild the transmission myself and I'm not real interested in plunking down a couple grand on having someone else do it or a new one.

Message: make sure to use the correct fluid when you change it. check a service manual. it probably should be ATF+3 or ATF+4. do not use Dexron or Mercon. if you do you'll really have some "weird problems".

Message: Yeah, I checked that daddio. It says in the service manual to use ATF+2 but then when I was in the store all they had was ATF+4. On the back of the bottle it said it should be used for Chrysler vehicles requiring ATF+2 so thats what I bought. Do they not make ATF+2 anymore?

Message: it is possible that ATF+2 is out of production. my '00 QC Dak has a manual trans so i can't say for sure but it sounds right.
