Subject: Pls help Rear Clunking IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 dakota QC 4.7 4x4 with LSD. Everytime I turn a corner I get a clunking sound from the rear of the truck. In trying to fix the problem I have replaced rear stabilizer bushings, links and shocks. The problem did not go away at all. When I turn the corner one way it will clunk, but will not clunk again until I turn the other way. With the truck jacked up I can pull/push on the tire and there is some play in there. Could this be the problem, or is this normal? Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.

Message: That play is normal. The clunking you most likely hear is the side-to-side movement of the axles...also normal. You can check the fluid level of the differential. If it is a bit low you can top it off. This MAY quiet it some. My `95 has made noise for years (I bought it new). While sitting in the garage I can shake the back of my rig, side-to-side and here a distinct 'metal' clunk from each axle end...again, done it for years. maybe I should fill/ change my diff fluids? naw, barely has 125K on it...

Message: Some play is normal. It is possible to have too much play.
