Subject: Sell or get something else?

Message:
Gas prices and fuel economy aside, my 97' Dakota Club Cab
5.2L is starting to break and stuff. Here is my dilemma: Should
I sell the truck even if the repairs cost less than what it's worth?
Or, should I keep it and drive it until it drops? I can get a decent
2002 Dakota Regular Cab V6 for around $5K or so (or
something similar, like a Durango, I like the idea of it too).
However, it's a hard decision for me. The 97 I have has 235,000
miles on it and has been great to me without any major
problems. Now, there is noise from the engine compartment,
the transmission might be going out, and it's leaking oil... I
don't know if and when I get those fixed, just to sell it and get a
new truck (I don't really want a car, I would mss having the
utility of the truck) or just keep it after fixing it and just let it
drive until it drops? I don't know... It's a really hard decision for
me. It's been a trooper and it's almost like a puppy to me at this
point... Loyal and kind (sorry, cheesy moment, but whatever).

What do ya'll think?

Thanks

At 235,000 miles I'd say you got your moneys
worth. I'd sell it for parts, Ky_man.

I guess so... I'm still thinking about it, but it looks like I'm leaning
toward selling.

Your list of things that are going on the truck are the big things
that you can see.
What about all the little things that you can't . You know those
things that a month after you've fixed the engine and tranny and
are low on cash that suddenly pop up and make you wish you
didn't put money into it in the first place.
Perspective, man, that's what you need.
Wipe the tears and put the old dog down. Get a new puppy and
smile once again.

I'm in the same boat, but a lot less miles. Trans is going bad. Spent $3K in the last year in repairs. Actually left me stranded a couple months ago - what a deal that was!

Could I fix the trans? Sure, not a big deal. Drop it off at the shop, pick it up a couple days later.

But, what's next? Transfer case? Front diff? Electronics? A/C in July? What if it leaves me stranded in the middle of WY, and I can't get back to work on Monday AM?

Instead, I'm probably going to replace it with a newer diesel truck. Certainly more expensive than fixing stuff. But more suited to what I use it for - towing and bad weather. And the reliability is very important. When I tow my car to Hallet, Miller, or Hastings, I want to be able to actually get to the track. And I want to get home on time.

Thanks you guys. I think I've made a decision to get something
newer and sell the truck and or trade it in (i'd get way less for it,
but I can't afford to wait a whole long time to sell it off). Thanks for
the good advice! It will be someone else's project that I just don't
have time for. It's gunna need some TLC, and hopefully the next
owner will give it that much.

Thanks ya'll.

Haha, I took the truck in to see what was going on with the
transmission and all the grinding noise was, was the engine fan
hitting the plastic housing... =P
Yeah, I definitely felt stupid, haha. The mount was loose and they
just put it back on and tightened it back up. All good now. I might
not have to sell it after all. Haha!
