Subject: Timing Belt Removal IP: Logged
Message: I am replacing my timing belt on my 95 4cyl
dakota sport. I am about 90% of the way done and
i have the belt lose but do i have to remove the
AC compressor to completely get the belt off?
and another thing it said to do in the haynes
manual before geting the belt of was to take out
"the spark plug" and rotate the crankshaft with
my finger over the hole until i feel pressure to
assure it was in the number one position...What
spark plug are they refering too.. the first
spark plug? if so, then i would have to remove
the ac compressor cause there is no way i can get
my finger in their to feel it. I have tried it
with the second spark plug removed and i did feel
the pressure build up but i am not sure that what
they want. any help would be great thanks.

Message: They want you to be sure that no.1 piston is up at the top of the compression stroke. This will put the timing marks for the crank, ass. drive, and camshaft in the correct position to install the new belt. Use the hose from a compression tester to reach in there.

Message: I'm kind of confussed as to why the manual would tell you to be sure the #1 piston is at "Top Dead Center" if all the timing marks are lined up then everything is as it should be. One thing to be careful about though, sometimes when you put the belt on then tighten it, the marks will move, so be sure when you tighten the belt make sure all the timing marks are where they are supposed to be. I have had to move a cam before so when I tightened it up everything would be as it should. When I say I had to move a cam before, what I mean is, I moved it either foward, or backwards one tooth then tighten it for it to be correct.
After you have it where you think everything is suppose to be carefully turn the engine over with a socket on the front damper and rotate the engine 2 full turns to make sure there is no contact between the valves, and pistons.
Good Luck

Message: Dak49 - you seem to be forgetting we are talking about a 4 stroke engine here. You missed what "Oldschool" pointed out - not just top dead center; but top dead center on the compression stroke. That's why you rotate 2 full turns instead of just one, for your method of checking for contact.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Kowalski, Ok, I think I see something here I missed. I was just thinking, with a timing chain, when the timing marks are lined up, the valves for the for the #1 cyl. would also be in the correct position as well. (assuming the #1 piston was at TDC)
Ok sir, I see what my problem is now, she was talking about before she started to take it apart to begin with, make sure it was on top dead center. Yes that would be correct.
I was assuming she already had it apart.
Than you for pointing that out.
Good Luck
