Subject: erratic idling IP: Logged
Message: Got a '01 EC 4.7 5 spd. 4WD. I've noticed lately that whenever I come to a stop (ie, at an intersection) my rpm's jump around. Typically it idles round 500-800 or so, but has been jumping up as high as 1500 rpm's. And no, I'm not resting my foot on the gas pedal. My guess is that it may be a sensor...not sure which one though. Have just over 100k on the truck. Curious if anyone has had similar problems and know what the source might be.
Thanks

Message: I had the same issue with my 01 and I found that the clamps where the air cleaner box connects to the plenum and rubber boot were not on right and I also cleaned with carburator cleaner a slight amount of buildup inside the plenum where the throttle plate opens and the idle problem disappeared.

Message: This is a common symptom of a bad battery. How old is yours?
Also, when was the last time you cleaned your TB?

Message: First off, thanks to both of you to helping me out. It's been a while, so I kind of gave up on this.
Haven't got to checking out my air cleaner, but will.
The battery is about 2 years or so old. Got it replaced with Schwab's top of the line. I've noticed some corrosion on the top of it lately though. Kind of confused, it TB timing belt?

Cleaning your TB with the Cleaner definitely may correct it, without even taking it off to do it.
I'm with Lee, and others

Message: Actually, while a bad battery can cause something similar, I don't believe it is causing this. The bad battery loss of idle memory is due to low voltage to the PCM and is evident at start up, or if bad enough - continuously. It results in stalling - not what is being described. The way Kent describes this I believe Lee is likely correct.
