Subject: 5th Wheel towing

I have a 94 Dakota Ext cab with a V8 with low miles very strong. It doesn't have a towing package. Is it possible to tow a 27' 5th wheel camper with my Dakota...if so what do I need to upgrade? Thanks for any info.

Just make sure your pin weight is less than your payload weight. Do not overload your axles.

Good advice there, and pin weight can vary considerably in fifth wheel trailers. The 21' Coachmen camper I am currently pulling with a dry weight around 4000# has much more pin weight than the 24.5' Prowler had with a dry weight around 5000#. I believe the weight distribution of the Coachmen is more typical than the Prowler; unless the 27' camper has lighter pin weight, it may be too much for your Dak. Another thing to look for with a short bed truck is an extended pin box on the camper, or a sliding fifth wheel hitch in your bed. This is to keep the front of the camper from hitting the cab of your truck in tight parking situations. Another good idea would be the addition of an auxillary transmission cooler.

if you have an auto tranny you will need to install a large tranny cooler iy you havent already
another thing to keep in mind is the dakota will have the power to tow it but may not have the brakes to stop it quickly if you get in to trouble, mine tow the car trailer (9500 loaded) (OD locked out of course) with no problems but i noticed quite quickly when the trailer brakes quit working that i had a hell of a time stoping it in a reasonable distance and i had fairly new brakes on the truck at the time . just somthing to think about

Thanks guys....all good advice. I'll keep this in mind for future. Looked at the 1995 Dutchmen 5th this am....too much work to be done for my tastes..alot of wiring, paneling, flooring etc..
So I'll be passing on this one. Guess I'm still on the lookout for one. Do you guys recommend a travel trailer for my Dakota instead?

Thanks again.

5th wheels in my opinion are the better of the two. If you can find an old shadow cruiser, they were nice light 5th wheels.

Yeah, fifth wheels pull much better, if you find one that is right for you. I found my latest one locally on "Craig's list". Trailers this size of any type should be taking care of their own braking; it's a good idea to keep trailer brakes working well.
