"BTW, gas was not $1.10 per gallon in 2002. It was in the $2's then. The last time it was in the 1s was in 1999." I don't know where you live, but I've kept a spreadsheet on my vehicles' gas, repairs and maintenance since 1985. In Jan 2002, regular unleaded (Mobil) was 1.099. In March 2002, it was 1.179. By May it was $1.359. The first time gas went over $2 a gallon here was May 2004. It went over $3 a gallon briefly in Sep 2005, then back to about $2.109 by Christmas that year. In June 2006 it went back over $3 a gallon. By Dec 2006, it was back down to $2.30 a gallon. It went back over $3 a gallon in June 2007 and stayed around $3 into 2008, spiking to $4 a gallon in June 2008. See a pattern here? Seasonal demand. Gas this morning at Sunoco was $2.859, down 12 cents from last night.
The comments about income vs gas prices prove exactly what I was saying - point measurements in time are ridiculous. You need to examine the relation over long periods of time. And consistently, gas is 3% of my income. For those who make less, it's a far bigger hit.

"While refiners continued to produce impressive amounts of gasoline and other oil products, product imports fell by nearly 14 percent, with total gasoline imports averaging 1.1 million barrels a day in August. The record for gasoline imports for any month is 1.5 million barrels per day in October 2005."

We are still importing 1.1 MILLION BARREL of gasoline a DAY!!!. Wither its 12% or 15% of total gasoline produced is mute. Its still expensive to import GASOLINE. O.K., you said gas was indeed in the $1s in 2002, but early 2002. Gas didn't really start to skyrocket until after 9/11.
The funny thing is, that right after 9/11 there were some crooked gas stations in the midwest somewhere that were trying to take advantage of 9/11 by pricing their gas at their gas at $5 per gallon and the government stepped in calling it fraud and threatened those stations with legal action for it. They then put their prices back down to the $1s per gallon.
Only 6 years later gas is up near $5 per gallon, including diesel, but the government isn't stopping it. Looks like the oil corporations paid someone off around 2002 and beyond.
Kind of like the way the government just recently paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to AIG CEOs to take a luxury vacation, claiming it was accomodations for them to go to their questioning hearing. The government is in on all the greed and corrupt stuff going on with the big corporations that are destroying our country and the world for that matter.
If I were you I would learn to duck, because the consequences for their evil is catching up to them, and they still won't stop their destructive activities; their lie filled ads destroying our economy are still being pumped unregulated by the government, over the airwaves and their fraud and theft keeps going full steam despite the country already falling into shambles from it. There are insame people on a rampage destroying our country and they are too sick and demented to know what they are doing, so they won't stop until everything is destroyed. I guess nature will just have it that way. The only way we can get out radio stations back from the demented evil that has taken them over and destroyed them by just playing a same tape of the same 20 old songs over and over every day for years, and using the broadcast stations to pump their lie filled crooked advertizements, is to let them destroy themselves and their world so the normal sain people can start it over.
Lie advertizing is the #2 threat to the United States. It is really showing that now. The stock market crashing and lost investments causing economic collapse from people defaulting on mortgages. They couldn't make their mortgages because the ran out of money. They ran out of money because they were swindled by evil America-destroying businesses lying about their prices in their fraudulent advertizements, hiding the real cost, advertizing only a small piece of the price to make it look like the real whole price, lie-by-deception by making the advertized price end in 99 to fool people into thinking it's cheaper. That is why people are broke. They can budget their money and live within their means. The evil businesses that lie in their ads about their prices then charge way more than they said it was, is what is behing all this destruction.
Some people tried to tell you so, but were just called "morons" by the ignorant.
Well have fun paying the price for not defending your country from these evil crooks.
Lie advertizing still remains the #2 threat to the United States, and the government still is doing nothing to stop it. They are in on it with the evil businesses doing it and thus are part of the destruction of their own country they govern. United States is in a bad position right now, in the line of fire of these evil crooks that ARE going to destroy the United States.
Gas going over $2 a gallon was in 2002-2003. It stayed in the $2s until the Katrina EXCUSE in 2005 when it went over $3.
In 2006 gas never went below $2.70 per gallon in Connecticut the whole year.
All through 2007 it was well into the $3s, not anywhere near $3 even.

Why don't you just say $2.86". That is the evil mentioned above. That is the evil lie-advertizing that is behind the destruction of the U.S. economy. The fraud of deception trying to make prices look cheaper by making them end in '9'. That is why the United States IS going to be destroyed. That evil price disguising is lowlifes destroying the economy. You should not let yourself be fooled by it, or don't cry when you get hurt by it, either directly or as the economy as a whole gets hurt by these derranged lunatics destroying the country with their evil lies.
You SHOULD fight the evil and do something to remove that disgusting crooked business lie advertizing from our society before it kills society. You don't have much time left. Seasonal demand? Nothing justifies gas being Triple the price it should be. This is crime, not "seasonal demand". The prices of everything in Connecticut have doubled in the past 10 years but pay scales have stayed about the same in the past 10 years.

Whatever the cause, the wages don't match the increased cost of living. That spells Death To America regardless.
The radio stations being under corporate control is why the veriety of music they play sucks.
They even have the audacity to lie and say they have the best veriety, now that is really a hit against America- destroying all the good things America had and then rubbing American people's noses in the damage they have done.
Proof- If the radio stations were owned by businesses competing with eachother instead of a monopoly, the evil quality wrecking corporate stations that don't know the first thing about what the listeners want, would be out of business in a month playing SHlT veriety and overly perfuse with ads and all the ads they play are mostly lie filled USA destroying fraud.
If regular entrapeneurs could start their own radio stations, playing what they want to play and having a great veriety of music with fun shows, they could have all the listeners in a week. The SHlT quality of those garbage corporate stations would be eazy to put out of business if there was free enterprize competition in America like there was before.
Just listen to Tom Petty's 2002 hit song "the last d.j.". It says it all. And don't expect to hear that song played on any evil corporate mondane broken record every day the same demented extremely limited mental capacity stations. They should be shot!

The reason people aren't making more than $9 per hour is because the United States is a piece of SHlT country where the government overtaxes people so they can't afford a college education, and they steal tax dollars by denying financial aid for college to rightful American taxpayers who are completely eligible for aid. Because $9 is grossly undercompensating for people's work by today's cost of living and current value of the dollar standards, good luck trying to save for your education. Maybe you can go to college when you are 60.
Unless you are one of the lowlife fakers that have someone else do it for you and you get the credit when you really didn't earn a college education because it was someone elses money from someone elses accomplishments that paid for it.
As soon as college educations are financialy accessible to United States citizens, then you can put U.S. citizens down if they haven't gone to college. I just got back from a trip to the smoky mountains. I paid $3.48 when I arrived on sunday 10/5 and $3.39 when I left on wednesday 10/8.
I did see a couple gas stations with some pumps out of gas.
Prices here are $3.65 to $3.88.
Good to see prices in ATL are $0.26 higher when the fuel distribution center is just south of ATL.
I read reports in the local news paper that some stations in GA are being investigated for price gouging. 1 station charged $9.99/gallon.

Umm.. I've never filed a lawsuit in my life. No one is filing lawsuits to stop refineries. It's cheaper to add on to existing ones than to build new ones, and that's what oil companies are doing and have been doing. They're not going to build more than what they need, and they're not going to glut the marketplace to lower the price to suit you. And they're not going to be mandated to - that's called Communism. Maybe you'd like that. I would rather see a more open marketplace, instead of cash giveaways of our tax dollars to an already-profitable industry. As for drilling, more wells are in operation than any time since 1981. And we only have 3% of the world's oil, and use 25% of it, so even if we extract all that we have, we can't be energy-independent by oil alone. And since it costs more to get the oil out here (because of the geography, not any conspiracy), oil companies will buy and process the cheapest oil available -which is foreign. Drilling for all that we have will not affect the world price, and only the world price will affect what you pay at the pump or for your furnace. As for the liberal tag, that's laughable. You don't know me and obviously don't care to. All you are doing is discrediting yourself with such ranting.

The reason seems to be that the highest wholesale prices are nearest to the highest income places in the US. The cheapest gas is often near the poorest areas. So one can conclude that the oil companies are charging as much as they believe they can squeeze out of people, not what the market costs dictate.

Bob - historically ATL has some of the lowest gas prices in the lower 48. Up until recently (last week) only 2 states had higher average gas prices than Georgia - Alaska and Hawaii.
The supply is finally stabilizing in the ATL region. Gas prices were also high as a result of shortages in the NC mountain counties, Charlotte NC and Nashville TN. Mostly due to supply and demand. Stupidly high demand and low supply (people topping off, waiting in line for hours in some cases, etc). Also lack of GA government efforts to control the situation. Part of GA's legislative efforts include tight control of energy during certain emergencies. The state actually could have enacted such laws recently but did not. Those laws include limiting fuel purchases such as a person can only fill up every other day (how to enforce?) and requiring a minimum number of gallons (keep people from topping off). People would top off and put only a couple gallons in so people who had only a couple gallons left couldn't get any.
It was a big mess. I bet something is changed in the way these situations are handled in the future.
Another reason is that ATL region only gets is fuel supply (will that change??) from the gulf coast. And they have stricter pollution controls so more additives are added to the fuel to reduce emissions.

You are a major ass. Atl area uses a special epc mandated fuel blend and the refinnery that supplies it was damage-they had a short supply !! The epa would NOT let in other fuels to cover the short fall. YOUR DAMN LIB GOVERMENT could have helped reduce the shortage and there for the price. But like you ,they chose to screw the people. All in the name of being green. Damn, you suck.

actually, the state did get the ok from the EPA to use "dirtier" fuel. I don't know if any of that ever made it ways into the area though.
Personally i think the problem was logistics. How to get the fuel from the refineries to the area as there are no piplines. Can a supplier spare a few tankers to make the drive? What's the profit margin for those few tankers?
I think the temp approval lasts until this coming monday.
