Message: There are a few other things to check as well, the connections at the altanator, both ground and power. There is something there that can cause the engine to stop running, usually though it won't run for more than a few seconds.
I too have an 88, and I bought mine in a junk yard had it towed home got it running and it ran pretty good but it smoked really bad. I found a lot of things wrong, but never had the same problem you are having.
I rebuilt the engine and have had very few problems since.
Good Luck

Message: Yes, 5 cylinder. I just dont understand what else could be the problem if all those things were replaced. Like i said it keeps coming back to the distributor- should the entire distrubutor just be replaced and go from there?

Message: i was reading through some other posts and read about the Hall-effect sensor? that if it mal-functions it will not tell the computer to allow power to the coil to produce a spark. (when checking the codes it said that something was wrong with the pick up coil so that was replaced but it still didnt fix the problem) anyway in the post it then said the distributor sends the spark but the computer sets the timing. it does this by controlling the voltage it send to the coil. when the PCM goes bad (n which you will get no code telling u) it overloads the coil and for some reason only some cylinders spark? Could this be the problem? is the hall effect sensor and pcm located in the distibutor? if so could the problem be fixed by just replacing the entire distributor?? thanks to all who have given suggestions!

Message: the first thing to do would be to check for any trouble codes. if no codes, i would first check a splice in the wiring under the PDC(main underhood fuse/relay box). about 6-8 inches from the box in the main harness there is a splice of 1 wire to 3 wires that gets corroded and will cause the truck to just die suddenly. these are red or red/white wires. you'll just have to unwrap the harness to find it.
