Subject: PowerSteering pump overheating.

Message:
Ok, I have a 1998 3.9ltr and this past December the power steering pump high pressure line started to leaak. Then in March it gave out. We replaced the whole pump and 3 weeks later it did it again. After replacing it again (it's warrentied) it has leaked over and over. It will get super hot and melt thhe o_ring in the line. Now, when it iis that hot the flued is luke_warm and the return line stays cool. I think its the exhaust manifold. But this past Monday the arage could not find anything wrong. No exhaust leak and he had no idea what it iss. They are putting. A new motor in next week, but not sure if it will continue to do it. Any ideas?

You can add an inline cooler.

We already thought of that. It would only help the fluid when it returns. What ever it is it is cooking the bottom of the pump where the line is. And the rack-pinion is quite and steers fine. I still think it's the exhaust, even though he didn't find anything.

Whats the pressure of the pump. and how much fluid is returning.
If there is ablocked orifice the fluid will heat right up and will burn out 0rings
resistance to flow = heat.

Well, all I know is it did it on the factory pump as well. But I will let them know that. The thing is, the return line stays cool but the rest gets blazing hot. Could the steering be fine and make no noise, but be blocked or not getting enough fluid? Thanks everyone.

I would think its in the rack someplace, it could be the exhaust but, if that was the case it would have done so from the factory. You could try by passing the rack and hook the pressure line and return line together and see if it gets hot. If not then I would say its the rack. If it is the rack, you may be able to flush it backwards and get some thing out of the way from restricting the flow of oil.
Good Luck

With the exhaust I'm thinking there's a leak and because of the rust he just couldn't see it. But if it is the rack, its only $158, so its not to much. But, wouldn't I have steering probs if there is a restriction? Their putting a motor in tuesday and he said he would flush it. Just talked to a guy at o'reilly's and he said that they all flow the same. So it can only be 3 things : pump, exhaust or rack. Thanks again guys. I will let you know what I find out.

IntenseBlue, I agree that if there is a blockage that the steering could be a problem, but I have seen so many things go wrong and still work (when you think they shouldn't) its a hard call.
I'm pretty much just guessing at this point anyway. If you figure out what the problem is let us know. I think however if it is the exhaust leaking, you could pour some oil down the throttle body while its running and if there is a leak I'm sure you will find it, I would recomend you do that out side not in a garage.

Good Luck
