Subject: 91' hard to start when hot. IP: Logged
Message: 1991 5.2L V8 Dakota runs great when I first start it and will keep running fine; however, if I drive it and then turn it off and let it sit for more than 15 minutes it wont want to start. I'm pretty sure the problem is electrical or fuel isn't reaching the TB. When I try to start it I can try over and over again and it will eventually start but with a higher than usual idle speed for a couple seconds and than it will stall within a couple minutes or stall when I start driving. If I just turn the key and don't crank it I hear the fuel pump turn on like always and then after I wait a couple minutes I will hear a click that seems to be coming from some where in the front of the vehicle but could be coming from the fuel pump. After I hear the click it will start every time and runs great with no stalling but it will have a higher idle the first few seconds that it is running. It is a lot worse on hot days.
I also notice that when in neutral or park the oil pressure is just a little bit low. When I put it into gear the oil pressure drops way down to pretty much the lowest the needle goes and the check oil light turns on. When the vehicle is in park the check oil light will flicker on and off. The gauge could just be messing with me though as it is an older vehicle.
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with that click I hear but what is it? Hoping it's not the fuel pump going bad. I'm not to sure how to check fuel pressure but when it doesn't want to start the fuel line going into the TB inlet doesn't feel like it has any gas going to it.
Any suggestions on why the vehicle doesn't start hot and wants to stall if I do get it started ( with out hearing the little click ) would be much appreciated.
