Subject: Transfer Case ? IP: Logged
Message: I own a 1993 Dodge Dakota, V8 (swapped in 5.9L for the 5.2L), automatic transmission, 4X4. I've been having problems with my T-case for the better part of a year. The first time it tore up, it was not fixed properly by one of my mechanics help. My mechanic finally got it fixed right (he and I thought) after about 3 tries and months of waiting on the correct part (that is out of regular production). Well on Monday morning, I lost the high gear in the T-case with no warning. We are both tired of this and I started looking for a used one on craigslist. I found one within 15 miles of my house, that came out of a 98 Ram. My mechanic was told by someone that the 93 T-case is a particular case to that year. I know that the NP231 has been used for many years and in many different vehicles. I also understand that there are differences in some on the 231s. (Like a narrower chain on some 6 cylinder models.) But I would think that the one from the Ram would be the same as one from a V8 Dakota. What do some of the experts here think? Will it work? Bolt patterns, U-joints, etc.?
Let me know what you think. I'd much rather pay $200 to have it fixed and not have to worry about it for a while.
Thanks, JWFIII

Message: I'm no expert, and yes there are a few differences between years even though the NP231 were used. I would think the one from the Ram would fit the DAk, though there could be some difference with the way its "clocked" meaning which way it points to the front axle. some may go towards the passenger side, some to the drivers side. So if its not set up to go to the correct side, its possible to change it so it will go the way you need it.
I hope that helps some.
Good Luck
