Subject: Clutch Safety Switch? IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone, bought a 03 dak with a 5 speed in it few months back. i left it out on the street in 1st gear the other day at a family thing. gave the keys to my little cuz telling him to go turn the a/c on in my truck, and by little i mean hes 13.
he comes running inside to tell us that he crashed into the trashcans out on the street, when i asked him what happened, he said he left it in first but didnt put the clutch in. next thing you know, he started it and the thing took off 4 feet. curious, i twiddled around with it a bit and found out that it started in neutral, no clutch needed.
I bought the truck used, and i'm figuring that the original owner cut the safety switch for the clutch. i was wondering if there was any way i could re-attach the sucker or....did mopar forget to add that little detail? every other manual car ive had has had that thing, did dakotas ship out with them?
Thanks in advance

Message: They used the switch long before 2003. But in the early to mid-80s they didn't have a safety switch. Sounds like the previous owner chopped it out.

Message: Where can i reconnect the switch? would it be around the pedals or would i have to dig around near the transmission?

Message: well, the clutch safety switch is there, and connected. i believe i have a bad switch. if i move it around a bit it will not start up, but once you put your foot on the clutch, it starts back up. problem solved just by doing that? no. if you try to start it again without putting your foot on the clutch, it'll start back up.
I think i have to be the only dakota owner who does not want their dakota to start up. hey, the way this is going, i dont think i ever have to worry about this thing not starting =]

Message: I am a new owner of a 1998 Dodge Dakota. I must press the clutch in very hard every time I start. The battery , lights, etc. are fine. Am I going to be stranded some place? Is there a switch that is wearing out or needs replaced? Thank you!
