Subject: opinion on electric fan
IP: Logged

Message:
ok i just installed an electric fan on my 99 5.2 4x4 and it still gets a little on the hot side. i have a 180 deg. thermo. but it definately goes past that at a light, etc.

so, the fan i got is 2500cfm and a 16". but the clutch fan seems to be a 18" if im not mistaken. so my question is, should i get another fan like a 10" or 8" to put on the other side or just buy another bigger electric fan.

thanks in advance, but the power that frees up buy the way is great!!

190 might help
sounds odd?
here why it holds the coolant in the rad longer for a bit more cooling

2nd
did you give the system a good flushing?
and i dont mean just running the garden hose

3rd
did you install a new rad cap?

When you say "still gets a little on the hot
side", are you saying 190, 195, 200?
Reason I ask is, I hear the same from others that
remove the factory clutch fan from 4.7 V8's also.

Did the fan you bought come with a automatic
on/off control you had to install so it could
sence water temp? If so, are you hearing the fan
cycle on and off? If it's cycling on and off, it's
controling like it should be.

I'm not sure you can adjust the fans temp on/off
set points or not.. I've heard some makes do.

Lets us know what you end up doing...

Up to 210* or so is fine while sitting still. Don't worry about that temp.

HGow did you wire it? With a simple on-off switch? Or temp controlled? Is it adjustable?

To make a fan more efficient, it needs to be shrouded properly. It will only cool the part of the core that it pulls air through. If you bolted it directly to the core, it's only going to cool that portion, and no other. That makes efficiency something like 50-60%.

If you left the factory shroud on, that's good. The fan should be attached to the shroud, in the middle of the round opening.

The fan should come as close to the edges of the shroud opening as possible. If you put a 12" fan in the middle of a 18" hole, it won't work well. I know, that's an extreme example. The point is, a 16" fan in an 18" hole leaves 2" all around. If the cooling is marginal, use some sheet alum to fill in that gap.

A 16" fan in an 18" opening will actually have a 1" gap all around - but other than a simple math oversight, .boB has the best advice for you here. Seems like some just don't know how a thermostat works - all it does is keep the coolant from freely circulating until the engine warms up to that point.

It shouldn't be expected to limit the coolant to that temperature.

Once the coolant is above the thermostat opening temperature, it circulates at the same rate, regardless of what that temperature is - as long as it remains above the opening temperature.

I'm one of those who've removed the 4.7 clutch fan with good results. What you want to see is what my truck is doing - running at about the same temperatures as before in any situation. If you are towing uphill on a 95 degree day with the AC on, it should be expected to run warmer than after it's been run easier. But not warmer than usual, when you were running the clutch fan. The important thing is that it shouldn't be running hotter than before; otherwise take all of .boB's advice.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

well as for a little hot it goes hotter than when the clutch fan was on there. i just ran some short trips so i parked it when i noticed it going hotter than norm. but has not reached 210. more like 200

the reason not only perf. gains why i did this change is bc my clutch fan was broken. whobble not cooling. etc.

well i just wired it up to the ignition switch for now as just for a test untill i decide how exactly how i want to do it. so in other words its running constantly.

and yes its bolted to the radiator so if i pullled it back a few in" it would work a little better? i guess it makes sence bc the mechanical fan isnt on the radiator. and yes i still have the fan shroud. so maybe that would be my first move...

i have seen adjustable thermo switches at Advance Auto for about 20 bucks that you could use in conjunction with a relay to switch the fan on as needed instead of it being on fulltime.

ran out of time tonight and going to install the whole unit tomorrow. ill let you guys know how this works. thanks for the suggestion.
