I'm having a weird misfire that I hope someone can help with. I have a 99 4x4 with a 5.2, 162,000 miles. Basically I am having a intermittent misfire that can happen at any speed and at anytime. Usually it happens at lower speeds and even at idle. At idle the truck will some times die, I can rev it up fine, but when it comes back down to idle it will stumble and sometimes die. The only codes I've been able to pull have been P0622 (alternator) P1495 (leak detect solenoid). I wouldn't think either of these codes would cause this problem, and the alternator is good, I had it checked. Just replaced the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs, but no difference. Any thoughts on where to check next?

Was gonna suggest plug wires...until I got to the end of your post. I'm taking it the problem is why you changed all the mentioned parts. Typically, when a coil goes bad, it is the opposite...idles fine, cuts out as RPMs go up.

162K miles...just curious, but when was the last time a 'good' fuel injector cleaner was run through it? Might be dirty injectors. My `95 5.2L will get tougher to start or develop a 'bumpy' idle once in a while. I'll spend the $6-$8 on a 3000mi injector cleaner and it clears right up. No garauntee this is the fix, but it also will not hurt...and it's cheap.

for what its worth
ive tried over 7 different ones and ive personally found the prestone complete fuel system cleaner gave me the best results i use it once a year
and every oil change i use a stp (black bottle) fuel injector cleaner check at check at autozone an advanced they put the stp on a 2 for 1 deal everynow and then

I'd check the distributor for excessive play. Unlike a coil, when a distributor goes bad, you'll see it more near idle, and it can start to stabilize as the rpms get higher. This is my experience with older points type distributors at least; I would guess the newer electronic ones could be similar.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

sounds like a low voltage problem at idle. i know you said you checked the alternator but a loose connection or weak battery could be the culprit. it tripped that P0622 code for a reason.

Well I've now been dealing with this for a few months, and it seems to be more consistent now. Basically it will only start missing when it is warmed up, and when it is missing it is going very rich. It constantly trips the same two codes as well. P1495 (Evap Leak Detection Pump Solenoid circuit) and P0743 (Torque Converter Cluch Solenoid/trans relay circuits).

I have tried many different fuel injector cleaners and no real difference.

ANy other ideas? I'm kinda stumped!!

I've been having some strange misfires in my truck over the past two weeks. I replaced everything you mentioned and still had misfires. I have 143,000. I am getting codes P0300 and P0301. I finally tracked it down to the fuel pump. When i turn the key On fuel pressure goes to 35# and immediately goes back to 0#. The difference I have is that I am getting a lean misfire not a rich condition. I bought a fuel gauge 0- 100# from Sears- about $40.00. Biggest problem- new pump from dealer is $650- so I went with a rebuilt from dealer at $280.
A coil check is very easy with a meter.

I have checked the fuel pressure and it is rock steady at 50# and stays that way when the engine is running well or missing and going rich. I also have checked the coil and it checked out good, I even tried another coil and still had the same issue. I have also gone through the check procedures for the leak detection pump and it checks out good as well.

This thing is driving me crazy, starting to think maybe that my computer is going bad???

I was getting weird misfire codes as well, about 500 miles on new timing chain and gears, hasn't come back yet...knock on wood.
