Hi all,

A couple questions to see if I'm just picky or there really are some issues with my Dakota. First, the dealership told me the bed is mounted on rubber bushings. That balogna; mine's metal to metal. Are they all like this, or should I go buy some? It moves around constantly over any kind of bump.

Second, do you all have these noises? I have a 2wd 5-speed:

1) Scraping sound when driving; like the driveshaft is scraping something but it doesn't show any scars.
2) "Click" as the truck goes into gear. Just listing it for completeness; I know this is normal.
3) Squeaks and/or small bangs from the tailgate over small but choppy bumps. Does your rear kinda shimmy a little too sometimes?
4) Slams that resonate through the bed when hitting bigger bumps, accompanied by the tailgate clatter.

I think I'm going to check all my bolts all over the place this weekend if I'm not swamped with work. Is there anything back there I can lube? Can't find any grease fittings anywhere.

TIA!

My 2000 R/C 4x2 rattles a bit over bumps from the rear end too. I went as far as removing the tailgate & spare tire to find it. Nothing yet.

I had lowered the truck, so it could be related to that as well. We'll see.

Man, I hadn't even thought of that! I'll take mine off tonight and see how it does tomorrow on the way to work. If nothing else, that should narrow down culprits a little, though I'm sure some of it's that. Please let me know what you find out.

MY bed squeeks like a mother-fuc&er, with the back window slid open I can hear it over my exhaust, which isnt very quiet. As for the grinfing noise havent heard that yet, and clicking gears don't have for I have an auto.

Does it also wiggle around over pretty much any size bump? It's noticeable on mine just glancing in the side mirrors. Like you, I can hear mine over my Gibson.

I took off my tailgate and confirmed my suspicions that most of the noise is, in fact, that piece. Found a couple others, though, and one of them in the driver's side leaf spring; it creaks. Is there a way to silence it? Just white grease? Suspect my spare's cable has streched, and looks like my license plate bracket is vibrating.

Also, has anyone checked to see if their bed is on rubber bushings? Mebbe I'll just find one in a parking lot and non-chalantly sneak a peek. "Hey you!! What you doin' to my truck there?!"

I think there may be a TSB on the creeking sound coming from the rear springs you might want to ask your local dealer about it. I think it involves replacing the plastic pads inbetween the spring ends. Try adjusting the tailgate so it is tighter and will not rattle. The bed of all the trucks are mounted directly to the frame no rubber bushings. Rubber bushings wouldn't be good with max payload in the box.

CW, have you considered changing your handle to "AnswerMan"? Thanks alot! But ... how do I tighten? On the tailgate I see a fastener above the latch (to attach it to the tailgate) and below it, attaching the cable. Should I just tighten the cable? The top one is perfectly tight, but the tailgate still wiggles a little bit. On the bed, everything is tight except for a small bit of play in the plastic/rubber blocks at the bottom that the bottom tailgate brackets fit onto.

Just an idea, but have you tried putting weatherstripping between the tailgate and bed?. That should also cause your latches to be a little tighter. May make it harder to close though.

You can also try a spray in bed liner like line-x. They line-x the tailgate and bed which reduces noise and also provides a cushion for the tail gate. Doing this eliminated most of my noises.

Thankyou Zaurusman I'm not sure I should tell you this since everone seems to like bashing dealerships and all but I am a Chrysler Tech. I do what I can to help and not to rape you of your money. I think this is a great site and have learned lots as far as performance stuff goes.

Anyways here is what I found. To tighten the tailgate you need a T-45 torx. The adjustment is on the tail gate post, where the latch latches to on the box loosen the post and you can move it in towards the box just a little to have more preload on the rubber bushings and if it stll sqeaks then try putting some dielectric grease on the bushings.

The TSB I refered to is bullitin 02-05-00 They want you to replace all of the spring tip liners and spring cinch clips. Part #05017561aa for the spring tip liners and 02808399 for the cinch clip. But before I would go to all that trouble I would take the dielectric grease and put it on all the sring tip liners. But you need the suspention to fully hang down so that you can drive a chizle in between the spring leaves to give you access to the liners, to lubricate them. Have fun and good luck.

Oh, NOW I understand! I'll try the grease on the leaf springs first, too. Thanks again, and ... I knew. ;-) Like everything else in life, competence varies by individual.

I hope you are kidding on the body mounts. The bed should be placed atop the frame by numerous rubber doughnuts, bushings. They may be recessed or covered by a panel or similar. I would highly doubt they got left off, all of the linkage would be messed up and the car would ride like carappe.

My truck rides great, G, nice and taught, but not painfully so. Probably because we were talking about BED mounts, not body mounts...
