Subject: Rear Differential Fluid Change Question IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2004 Dakota SXT. I need to change the rear axle fluid. It appears that there is no drain plug, and I really don't want to pull the cover off. Could I use an oil vacuum pump to remove the fluid from the fill hole? Has anyone done this?

Message: Yes it can be done with a vacuum pump. But the best way to be sure to get all the old oil out and check it for metal particles is to remove the differential cover. This also gives the opportunity to check and inspect the gears for any damage, chipped gear teeth, loose bolts, etc.
Dodge dealers sell a transmission/gear sealant you can use when reinstalling the cover that sets in about an hour or two. An equivalent is probably available at parts stores too.
I just did this on my Dakota last weekend. It's not that bad, unless you spill used gear oil on your shop floor and make a heluva mess like I did.
