Subject: Brake Problem? IP: Logged
Message: I just noticed something before walking into the
office this morning and its been bugging me. I
saw some oily/sooty type of black cr@p on the rims
of my front tires. I drive through a couple of
road construction areas, so I thought maybe it was
just that, but I didn't see any of the same type
of stuff on the back rims. Any ideas what this
might be? I haven't had any braking problems that
I have noticed. I have just had the truck 2
weeks. Bought used w/ 29K miles. 2000 Dakota Quad
Cab w/ 4.7L
TIA,
Jeff

Message: jwb_atm_93 it's just break dust that's normal. that's if it's on both of the front wheels, sonuds like you do a lot of city driving or your hard on your breaks. If so just keep an eye on the break pad material, (thickness)

Message: Yes, I most of my driving is in the city. 20min
drive to drop my daughter off at daycare, then
another 20min to get to work. Most of that around
45mph with stop lights and such. Before this
morning, I hadn't seen anything like that. Maybe
it was just that we had been having drier weather
until yesterday, and the wet rims allowed the dust
to stick more easily?

Message: jwb_atm_93, the reason the brake dust is on the front rims is you have disc brakes on the front and it is not on the back because you have drum brakes and all the dust stays on the inside of the drum. Not a problem at all, just watch the pads in front like Clevite 77 mentioned.
Take care all,
Rick

Message: I find the right front tyres have way more brake
dust than the left. Do you think there may be a
problem with the balance...

Message: ABSOLUTLY NOT NORMAL!!!
I had to bring my truck in to have the rotors changed out. They were faulty. I went in at 11,200 miles. Fortunatly they were in warranty still. You are prob out. Have someone take a look at the rotors (or do it your self). Take a wheel off and look for rings around the entire rotor, this is scarring.
That is what was causing all of the break dust on my truck. Now, Yes, you do get break dust that is normal, but you shouldnt be able to wipe and see a difference every few days.
jwb_atm_93> When you lay in on the brakes, does the truck jitter and shake? i dont mean from a slow stop either. take it ona back road, get going to 45-60, lay in on it as if traffice just came to a stop (dont lock them up or anything). Feel the truck, listen for the chattering. That might help you out as well.
TeamFast> If you had 1 faulty rotor, that could cause a pull. you should check for scars on your right side (check the left too...).
Now, there is a huge posting that i have been involved with about Dodge's faulty brakes. Search
NHTSA.Gov's Website
I would also suggest checking out The Warped Rotors / Brake Drum Mod. I hope this helps you out. Good luck!

Message: Sorry! Clearification:
NHTSA.Gov's site is the National Highway Traffic Saftey Association. They have a HUGE database you can sear all about TSB's, Recalls, and most importantly... Consumer Complaints!
Search for your truck, and notice that there ar eabout 10 catagoried for brakes. Its really sad. There needs to be a TSB or Recall.
Can you imagine the cost to Dodge? Prob in the millions! If not more. everyone who ever did break work would likely be reimbursed somewhat.
freaky. Oh, let me know what you find!
-Dave.

Message: TEAMFAST, I have the same problem, more dust on the right front. My brakes just don't seem right, they feel too soft and the pedal sinks too much. I adjusted the shoes but still too soft. I can also feel a small "bump" in the pedal when it gets down too much, almost like the proportioning valve is giving.

Most likely, the rear axle speed sensor has failed.
