Message: That would depend on the reason it got jammed shut.
Did you slam it shut too hard?

Message: Start by removing the cover plate on the inside of the tail gate. That is where the linkage is. Maybe you can see what is malfunctioning and fix it yourself.

Message: Spray-on lining over a removeable panel was poor judgement on your part.
Abrasion works real good for the screw heads. As will a blade of some sort to cut the panel loose from the tailgate.

Message: The guy who sprays bedliners here locally actually removes the panels and sprays them individually, knowing they may be accessed later on. Yours is not done the same?

Message: Nope, mine was sprayed over, I bought the truck that way, i had nothing to do with it.
what kind of abrasion will work, steel wool pad, or some type of compound?

Message: My 2004 Dakota has no access panel.
There are three T-40 torx screws on the inside of the tailgate that when removed, allow the handle on the outside of the tailgate to be removed to gain access to the release rods that go out to the latches.
Better take a real good look at it, because we have the same body style, and according to the parts manual for your year, yours is the same as mine.
If your screws are filled with spray-on liner, you can try gouging it out with a small sharp object, sharpen up a little tweaker screwdriver like a chisel and cut it out, or as a last resort use a drill-powered easy-out. That last option will, of course, require new screws.

Message: Those three screw are to remove the mechanism inside the tailgate. The outer cover for the tailgate handle simply pops off.
Get a screw driver or something flat so you can pry that plastic cover off. Once you have the cover off start taking apart the rods that are inside the tailgate (you don't have to remove those torx screws, leave the inner mechanism alone). Once you have the taken apart the inner rods, pull them inwards towards the center of the tailgate and hopefully that will solve your problem. If that doesn't work get a sawzall and check ebay for a new tailgate.

Message: ok checked ebay they do have a new tailgate...just kidding!
I havent had time to work on it yet, i have been busy setting
things up for our county fair, I will have time this saturday
morning to work on it, I'll let you guys know if it works.
Another problem Im having is my AC is blowing out of my
defrost, it isnt switching to blow out the vent, Im assuming that
one of the vacuum hoses has a hole in it, any idea which hose i
should check first?
Thanks for all the help, it is greatly appreiated

Message: Good news! I got the tailgate opened, it only took about 5 min
from beginning to end. The handle cover came right off and I was
able to pull/pry open the latches. Thanks a Million!
Still, any advice on why the AC is blowing out the defrost and not
the vents?
