Subject: THIS WILL BE A STUPID QUESTION FOR MOST! IP: Logged
Message: I never had air conditioning ever in a vehicle. I now have a 2000 dodge dakota 3.9 lt. v-6 with air. My question is, When the air conditioning is turned off and maybe its a cool morning and I want to use my defrost setting, my ac compressor turns intermitently, But my ac cooling fan in the radiator turns on constant. That dont seem right like in the winter time and I use the defrost setting that the cooling fan in the radiator would run, I want the radiator to heatup in the winter not be trying to keep it cool. IS THIS THE WAY THE DAKOTA AIR SHOULD WORK? OR SHOULD THAT NOT BE RUNNING WHEN I PUT MY DEFROST FOR HEAT ON? IF IT SHOULDNT, WHAT PART COULD BE THE PROBLEM? It just dont seem right, that would make it use more gas I would think to. If I dont want the air on I dont want the air on. Oh when I turn off the defrost everything shuts off, cooling fan and the compressor dont turn at all. Thanks everyone!

Message: That's how the defrost setting works. The defroster uses the a/c system to dry the air - you can't defrost very well with moist air.
all vehicles do this.

Message: Dan's right, Perry, almost all vehicles are set up to run this way, now.
Actually it's more defog than defrost.
In the winter, I unplug the electrical connector at the A/C compressor, so I can get heated air on the windshield to do some real defrosting.

I have a no heat problem. I replaced the heater core and all the vents are clear and blow air. The coolant lines to the heater core aren't clogged because the core gets antifreeze.
Why am I not getting heat out of it?

Message: I do the same as Jerry. I take it one step
further. I also remove the electric radiator fan
relay.
On my 02, unplugging the air compressor clutch
will cause a trouble code. To take care of that
problem, insted of turning the compressor clutch
on and off, I have a small light bulb turn on and
off. It keeps the computer *happy*.. lol
And Perry, NO question is EVER to stupid to ask!
That's how we all learn.

Message: THANKS SO MUCH ALL YOU GUYS! I JUST THINK IT MAKES THE MOTOR USE MORE FUEL FOR NO REAL GOOD REASON. I HAVE HAD DEFROST IN ALL MY VEHICLES AND THEY ALL WORKED FINE AND NEVER NEEDED TO DRY THE AIR. ANYWAY THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!

Message: some people even go one step further in summer and have a cut off switch on the heater core hoses that keeps the antifreeze from entering the heater core thus allowing the a/c to work better and cooler.

Message: Dan M.-I live in so cal and its been pretty hot lately, where exactly would I put this "cut off switch on the heater core hoses"? Would it just be something like a PVC valve connected inline?
