Message: OK when I was on my way home yesterday my truck starts making a real bad whining noise when I shift into all the gears except 4th, also has a bad tranny fluid smell any ideas what this could be? Was told the camshaft bearing was bad and needed a new tranny but looking for second opinions.

Message: Geez. It's hard to tell, even from that extremely detailed description.
Perhaps a complete new engine and transmission will fix it.

its 98 dakota 4cyl 5 speed
only makes this noise while in gear and driving once clucth is depressed noise goes away noise is very loud in all gears except 4th gear and its not there at all. The smell of tranny fluid is strong all this happened during regular daily driving nothing out of the ordinary. As I changed from third to second at red light is when it was noticed. I dont know what else I can tell you I am no mechanic as is obvious. Just looking for some help not a smart azz remark. thanks

Message: That's better. The camshaft bearing you referred to must be the selector shaft, not the engine camshaft bearing, as I thought you meant.
Yes, it sounds like you may need to replace a transmission bearing or two.
When you depress the clutch pedal the transmission is disconnected from the engine, but if you're not stopped, the vehicle's forward motion will still cause rotation of the tranny innards, even coasting in neutral. You can use that to maybe isolate the cause of the noise.
One question not answered: does it make this noise with the vehicle stationary, in neutral and with the clutch engaged?
I don't have gear ratio info for your transmission, but if 4th is 1:1 ratio, that would indicate possible bad bearing on one of the shafts inside the unit. There's three shafts in there: input, output and idler.
A reputable transmission specialist is your best bet for a thorough and honest diagnosis.

Message: well here is what i know
no noise when driving and clutch engaged, noise only present when in gear accelerating and decelerating, no noise when sitting still or coasting. I was told it was a input shaft bearing what will that cost me to replace at a repair shop?
Thanks
