My truck is a dodge dakota club cab,99,3.9L v-6.It has about 61000 miles on it.I bought it brand new.It had 12 miles on it after the test drive. The first problem came at just 26,000 miles. The catalytic converter began to make noise, and broke apart inside. The second problem came about the same time, the front tires were wearing badly so I had the front end looked at and the dealer ended up putting a steering rack in it.(but they refused to do anything about the 180.00 goodyear tires that the steering rack munched up).The third problem came around 55000 miles, the thermostat got stuck. The forth problem came about the same time, the catalytic converter failed again(2nd time). The fifth problem occurred about four weeks ago.The heater core failed, and released a lovely mist of antifreeze into the cab,got all over the winshield, and made me nautious by the time I got back home with it(just before the truck overheated.I knew that I had to have the truck towed in,and probably wouldnt see the truck for some time. While it was there,I had them check out the front end again.I had just replaced their lousy goodyears again, this time with pirelli scorpion z's,cheaper, and better. When I left the tire shop, they told me the front end was sloppy again. The dealer diagnosed the problem, the wheel bearings were bad. They also said it needed a new water pump,AND AN EXHAUST MANIFOLD!Thank God I have the extended, full care warranty! If all these problems were not bad enough, the service I have received from my dealer(ELMWOOD DODGE,EAST PROVIDENCE,RI)was horrible.I had the truck towed there on a saturday,I called them on Tuesday,to get an idea as to when I would get the truck back. They told me they were having a parts availibility problem.Keep in mind, the only problem with the truck that made it undriveable was the heatercore.I know someone who works at the Boston parts distribution center for dodge,he told me that if the dealer had ordered the heater core by 4pm,they would have it by the time they opened the next day!So much for non availibility! So I called back the following Thursday, still couldnt get an answer,so I decided to use the 5 free rental car days that my warranty provided,I figured, that should get me to work until they get my truck back to me...surely it would be finished by the following Tuesday, right?YA,RIGHT!So I called Tuesday morning, they told me the truck was partially done, and would have to come back to be completed,at which time,I would be eligible for another 5 day rental car.Fine,I understand there were quite a few problems with it,and they only got part of them done,I mean, surely they DID complete the heatercore, surely they knew the truck was undriveable due to the heatercore, surely by having it towed in there, that would give them at least a suttle hint that you cant drive the f---ing truck!Right?YA,RIGHT!I pick up the paperwork, and my keys, and start to head out,and I see that the heatercore hadnt been done yet.I was in disbelief, they had the truck for a week and a half, and I still cant drive it!So I asked the sales advisor about it.I told him the truck was undriveable, and I had no more rental time.I was pissed! He told me to take it for a ride, and try it.lol,ok Bill,I'll try it!I went for a ride,a mile later,I was nautious from the antifreeze, and the thermostat was rising fast.My first thoughts were, hmm,I wonder if I could tolerate this smell long enough to get on the highway and get it up to 100 mph till the motor blew? However,I knew I would pass out from the antifreeze and probably hit a tree,so I turned around, and went back to tell Bill it was undriveable. They refused to give me a vehicle to drive, told me I could pay for the rental at 30 bucks a day(all over a truck that I pay 365 per month for, which I hadnt driven in about 2 weeks, hmm,ya think chrysler would accept 1/2 payment this month??I think not!So I called a relative to pick me up,and told Bill that I would be going home, and start to make some phone calls,at that point,he said he would check to see when they expected the parts in,and drew up some b.s. paper work that had the heatercore being done by 5pm,the next day, however,he said he doubted it could be done by then, and it wasnt!I went home and found a 1800 number for chrysler, and called them, told them the story, that was when the dealer seemed to start moving their assets a little faster. This brings us to thursday, two weeks after the day I started the 5 day rental.I was talking to Bill, and told him that I had to work, friday, saturday, and sunday, and at this point,I have no way of getting to work.I need that truck back,or a vehicle to drive, and I'm not paying for one.If you cant do something for me,put someone on the phone who can,or I'm gonna start really rattling some cages. He called me back, and told me it would be done at 3pm on friday.which was just enough time for me to pick it up and go to work.It was finished, minus the exhaust manifold, which I'll have to return for.So this major aggravation is over, right?YA right!I got on the accelerator for the first time yesterday after getting the truck back, and with it came a major rush of antifreeze into the cab.I mean, wtf, all I wanted was a new vehicle to get me back and forth to work, didnt mind paying a good price per month for that reliability and knowing I would be able to get back and forth to work.I work for a Japanese film manufacturer, and most of the employees drive toyotas and nissans,I took pride in buying an American made Dodge. My old supervisor bought a v6 tacoma about the same time,we compared our trucks in every way.The price tags were about the same,I like the space in my truck more than his,I think it looks nicer than his,he has 4wd,I have just 2wd.He has slightly less mileage than my truck,AND MOST OF ALL,NO PROBLEMS WITH HIS TOYOTA!It is friggin embarrassing. No other way to describe it.Does anyone out there have any suggestions on talking to hrysler about taking this truck back in trade towards another truck?I wont buy another one unless they take care of me price wise.I cant believe I'm acutally willing to give dodge another chance!

This is insane. I bet the lemon law will not help you since most of your problem relate to one failed component and the dealor tyring to replace it. Uggg. I would go in the middle of their show room and make sure every one who was in there and every one who walks into the room knows about your problems. Tell the manager you dont have any way to get home without a vehical they provide and see if you get what you want. See if they will give you a brand new Dakota ro drive until they get yours fixed.

why not just put it on blocks and throw a brick on the go pettle? if you did this everytime you had a problem, the dealer might get tired of replacing engines and give you a new truck. ;)

or fill the bed full of lemons and park it in front of the dealer

They have not impressed me.

if your trucks keep breaking down, why dont you just sell them? right now the interest rates are VERRY low on new vehicles.

Why sell it to some unknowing person? Why not make a company stand behind the product they sell? I understand that a very small number is like this. DC--->Dodge calim quality. Back it up. A corp. that big should be able to.

I also understand that others try to take advadage of big corps. as well. I should not have to talk to more than the service mgr. if him at all to get somthing fixed!

Yes... I would fight and even bring Dodge corporate into it... if need be.

I just forced my dealer to fix my engine and repaint my truck since there were "obvious" problems with it.

Don't give up without a fight!

MY 99 is a piece of junk too......i tried the arbitration route but that was useless........go for a lawyer right away...sounds like you have a case to me.......dodge is crap, i would sell mine in a heart beat and get a chevy if i could but why lose money on selling it or trading it in when dumb dodge should fix it?? These trucks really are garbage, especially the 3.9 liter. Its ridiculous, they can't even put a friggin ball joint on that works or a paint job without dirt in it.....

I too had a '99 V6. The catalytic converter fell
apart on mine at 6000 miles and was
replaced under warranty. It fell apart AGAIN at
12,000 for the guy I sold it to. DC OBVIOUSLY
has a problem with their converters on that
engine/year!!!

I had one lemon in my life and it was a toyota 4runner 96. WHAT A PEICE OF SH**. Almost everything broke. But the only good thing was that most of it kept breaking at the same time so less trips to the dealer. When the head gasket blew they refused to fix it so i bought a dodge. Never had a problem with a dodge. I feel really bad for you guys. Maybe its the dealer.

I feel. REally. I have been a mech at all the major dealerships and i was suprised to see all the tech letters from Chrysler advising the service departments on things that are going to be problems.(Dont for the love of christ buy a grand cherokee). All vehicles break down, however, when chrysler products break, it is usually major. I wonder where the technology went when they bought benz? O! Thats right. We got autosticks in our stratus. But on a serious note, the lemon law should cover you. And my 98 has no problems ....yet.
