Subject: 97 Bed Removal IP: Logged
Message: I need to check and possibly replace the fuel pump in my 97 Dakota Ext-Cab V6. I have seen many comments that removing the bed assembly is easier than draining and dropping the fuel tank. Any input from those who have done a bed removal or fuel tank removal?

Message: if you have someone who can help, it's fairly easy to remove the bed. The biggest problem I've read about on removing the fuel tank is the straps - sometimes they are hard to reach to get off, and harder to put back on.
Removing the bed is easy with help. unscrew the fuel filler hose that runs from the fuel door to the tank. disconnect the rear lights, if you have a spare tire under the bed - remove it. Then you have to just remove the bolts - I think 8.
Once the bed is lose, pick it up and slide it back - rest it on the back tires and back bumper. Consider covering the bumper and tires to keep from messing up the paint job on the bed.
I replaced the fuel pump removing the bed in my old 95.

Message: yup, thats the way to go. did it on my 97. i was able to back into a shed, lift it up with a chain hoist, then pull the truck ahead to work on the fuel pump. when done, i just backed her back under, lowered the bed and snugged it up. if i remember right, the only pain was the wiring for the lights, no problem, i just wasn't thinking about disconnecting them.
by the sounds of it, i'll be doing it shortly on my 93!
good luck!

Message: Sounds good to me, I dropped the fuel tank and it was a pain. If you have a good amount of gas in it, its even worse. If my pump goes out again I will be removing the bed. I needed a friend to help put the tank back up with a help of a jack and emptying the tank. Getting the tank in just the right position took some time because the straps will bend incorrectly when you remove the tank, when you put the tank back into the correct position the straps will also need to be re-bent into the correct shape for everything to fit snug and I don't think its a good idea not to have a canister filled with explosive fluid not be snug.
So in my opinion I'd go for the bed removal
Good Luck.

Message: While you have the bed off, cut a hole and bolt in a patch in the bed. Makes pump access so much easier for next time.
