Subject: 91 dodge manual to auto IP: Logged
Message: Hi!
I have a 91 dodge dakota short bed 4x2 WITH THE 4 CYLINDER. The manual transmission let fly right at the 200k mile mark. I am not having any luck finding a replacement around here (East Tennessee), and since my girlfriend can't drive a manual, my question is:
Can I swap an automatic transmission, and somehow bolt a floor shifter onto that?
I am concerned that there might be power issues.
If I can, which one should I look for? There are a bunch of V6 / auto daks in the junkyards around here, but I want to preserve as much of the fuel economy that I can (and I just dumped 300 into rebuilding the 4 banger) so I really don't want to drop a 6 in there.
Thanks in advance,
-Shawn

Message: Shawn, Dodge never put an auto in the 4 clyinders for a reason, the engine doesn't have enough power to move it. Or I should say that's my opinion. I think what you would have to do is contact someone like transdapt, they may have a something to make an auto fit, but then you will need a flex plate (flywheel) so you could use an auto trans. If it was the older 2.2 that wouldn't be a problem, with the newer trans I'm not sure. It could be some of the cars used the same engine in that case you could start with a car auto trans flex plate. The problem would then trying to get the torque converter to fit your flex plate. Since Chrysler hasn't used a rear wheel drive car in a lot of years, except for the newer rear drive big cars you wouldn't be able to use a car trans, unless you wanted to change over to front wheel drive. In which case it would cost a lot more than the truck is worth. Try to find a salvage yard that has a national search and see if they can find one some place else and could have it shipped to you. There is a company in Memphis that rebuilds transmissions, but they rebuilt mine twice and screwed it up twice and refused to honor their warranty, so I wouldn't recommend them.
Good Luck

Message: I'd look real close at a junked Dodge Sprit that
has a 2.2 Auto. Reason I say close is because the
car will be front wheel drive. Not sure you could
make the cars auto tranny work on your truck.

Message: Thanks for the helpful responses. I kind of figured the same thing, but this site seems to have a great deal of more knowledgable people than I.
I guess next step is to start looking at those parts finder people, then try to piece together another manual trans...
Thanks again!
