Sounds like you tried turning the headlight switch knob to make sure you have not inadvertantly turned them on yourself. Is the courtesy light that shines on the passenger floor (my `95 ext cab has one) coming on as well?
...you may have:
1. an (internally broken or dirty) door switch that, while actuating, is failing to disrupt (stop) the electrical current flow. If you have some contact cleaner or WD-40, try spraying it.
2. a wire chaffed through somewhere, keeping the circuit permanantly grounded (light always on). This you would simply have to chase the wires to visually see.

Until you get it corrected a more effective work around would be to remove the fuse that controls the light(s) vice the battery cable. Removing the battery cable also causes your computer to reset each time. Then your rig has to re-establish itself to your driving habits. This can cause stalling, poor performance and poor GAS MILEAGE.

Good luck!

well
