Subject: Rebuild or Replace the rear? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota. For a full explaination of how this came to be, see below. Here is my position/question. My rear end is a 3.55 gear 9.25 inch 12 bolt rear diff with 11.5 inch drum brakes. Not one junk yard has a wheel to wheel replacement for it, all of them come with 9.5 inch brake backing plates. To swap I'd have to take the axles out of my old one, and the new one, swap plates and then put it back together anyway.
So I am thinking I may as well just rebuild the rear I got since it has to come apart anyway. The only thing wrong with it is a missing shim, and a few broke teeth on the speed ring(I'd replace the main gear and pinion and the spider), What would you do, rebuild it, or do the whole swap?
***********************
Full story...
Recently the ABS and E-Brak light came on while going down the highway....the brakes still work fine, no ABS.
So with some investigation I found that the rear differential speed sensor was broke(shorted). A trip to the parts store and it is fixed, but, then my truck would inititate the ABS alot, every time I touched the brakes, for the first 5 minutes of driving and then the lights would come on and the ABS would be off again.
So more investigation, I open the rear end up. Several teeth from the speed ring on the main gear are broken and there is a quarter sized (shape and thickness of a quater) piece of metal (twisted and bent) laying in the bottom of the housing, with the normal sludge. I showed a mechanic buddy of mine, he thinks it is part of a shim, say's there are four of them so with 3 remaining it should be fine. And it is. But the ABS is annoying and I need it right to have my son riding with me. Can't risk anything nuts happening.

Message: If it was mine, I think I would go ahead and rebuild it. If you would have to go through all the trouble to change everything from the broken rear to the junk yard rear anyway, I would get a new set of gears and rebuild it. It may cost a little more but, if the junk yard rear doesn't last very long it may be more cost effective to rebuild.
Good Luck
