Subject: Problems with transmission and brakes...
IP: Logged

Message:
i have a 2000 dakota with a 3.9 and 5 speed tranny. up to 68,000kms now i think and im having some problems with her now.

the front brakes dont release all the way so are almost constantly dragging. the year old rotors are worn down quite a bit and the truck wont roll while im on little hills. calipers are a year old as well and both sides are dragging evenly.

a while ago when i drove to the store and when i went to leave it wouldnt go into any gear. when i tried to put it into first the truck would roll forwards and then roll back when i tried to go into reverse. finally jammed it in 1st and had rough shifting until i shut her down and then everything went back to normal.

now its difficult to get into gear sometimes and when i go to start driving it will jerk forwards when i shift into 1st.

could the hydraulic system be screwing up my brakes and clutch operation?

also, i just noticed a few days ago that my reverse lights dont work anymore. the fuse is not blown so im assuming theres a switch of some sort in the tranny that detects when its put into reverse?

for the tranny, there are no weird noises and everything is normal except its hard to get into gear sometimes. ive also noticed that its very easy to slip out of gear with little pressure on the shifter.

for the brakes the RPM's will lower slightly when idling and i depress the brakes. theres also a buzzing type noise when idling and it gets louder as i depress the brakes.

any help is appreciated.

well

ok brakes 1st

time to get them done
I would suggest calipers and replacing
the RUBBER caliper hoses also

2nd tranny
could be worn clutch
but first I would drain out the gear old
replace with some fresh stuff with the correct amount and see how the trans shifts

The hydraulic systems are 2 completely different systems, so one shouldn't effect the other.
You could be having problems with the clutch system, check the oil level, its located to the right of the master cly. as you stand in front of the truck. If its low, add brake fluid till full. If the fluid level is ok, then it could be in the clutch, or other problem with the linkage.
I agree the brakes need to be redone, maybe you should have lubed the pins that hold the brake calipers on so they could slide back and forth easily.
Good Luck

not sure if my post went up or not so ill try again...

i just found a crack on the tranny where its bolted to the cross member and theres about a 3/16" gap. i think i called my truck every name in the book when i found that.

could that be what is causing the shifting problems, super easy to pull out of gear without the clutch, and the reverse lights not working?

how much would a new tranny cost me? i plan on selling it after i fix it so i want to find the cheapest way possible to fix her up.

she only has 67,800kms on it so i should get a decent buck for it.
