I've got a 96 dakota with the 3.9 L. Every time i start it it floods real bad and as soon as it dies it starts right back up but it runs about 2 to 3 grand for a minute. Any ideas on what it could be. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Might try having any stored codes read.
Is the '96 fuel injected ? If so, pull and read the plugs - looking for a wet or black one where that injector might be sticking open.

Thanks for the info. The 96 is throttle body fuel injected. The injecters are about a year old, but i will check the plugs. I was thinking it might be vacuum related but i have checked all the lines and there fine. It all started when the water pump went out. Is there any sensors that might cause it. Again any help is appreciated.

With throttle body injection the plugs should read about the same; so it won't single out a sticking injector like in a multipoint injection like mine. It will tell if you are really flooding or not, though. Definitely have the codes read.

I thought the last year for TBI was '91? '96 should be OBDII/MPFI and instead of throwing parts at it, do as Kowalski said and check for codes. they will lead you in the right direction.
