Subject: Tail Lights IP: Logged
Message: I rewired my boat trailer and when I plugged it in to my wiring harness (aftermarket) on my 04 dakota i noticed that when i turned my lights on neither the trailer nor the truck's tail lights where on. The blinkers work (on both) and break lights work (on both). I disconnected the trailer, and the truck's tail lights were still out. Same as above, both break and blinkers still work however.....
Are there two lights? One for the break lights and one for the tail lights? Did i blow them. I checked the fuses and all seem ok.
Any thoughts?????????

Message: You check the wiring in the harness to make sure it's wired up correctly? You may have messed up something in the headlight switch too...not real sure...but that'd be a start anyway...

Message: Well, the wiring harness that i have on the truck has worked fine for about 3 years now..... and i did look at it and it seemed fine. Do you think it may have something to do with a grounding problem or something.....I have no idea anymore. It started when i hooked in to the boat trailer. It may just me VERY coincidental, but that would be hard for me to buy.
It it ground out or something, could that have busted the bulbs or somthing (that is of course if there are several bulbs in the tail light assembly)

Message: It's possible...I'm not real good with electrical issues...but I would guess unless something blew, once you disconnected it, it should have worked fine.
Now if your switch went bad...perhaps something fried it or it mechanically broke, it'd seem coincidental, but that could be the only problem that occurred. If your tails are the same as on my 98, there's only 2 bulbs in each tail light...one bulb is for the reverse lights, the other is for the brake lights/turn signal/headlights on. It'll help to figure things out if you figure out the wiring schematic for how the lights actually operate...just start tracing it back from there.

Message: Very unlikely that this would be a grounding problem; but you could have a short in the trailer wiring that caused the problem in the truck. Recheck the trailer witing that you did; especially the color for the running lights - sounds like it may be shorted to ground. That could have caused the problem with the truck, and the trailer lights won't work until both problems are found and fixed (this is assuming truck running lights were okay to begin with, as you believe). If the truck fuses are all okay, it may have damaged the module in the trailer wiring kit that helps the truck balance the additional electrical load. You can check that by unplugging the aftermarket trailer wiring module from your truck wiring harness, and returning your truck to the stock wiring configuration.
