Message: Don't know... but I do know that bad 02 sensors can cause the cat to blow. The sensors monitor and adjust fuel/oxygen ratio, so if they are off and the engine runs too hot, the cat can overheat and the ceramic can shatter.

Message: I kept getting the Check Eng Light here and there. So I replaced the front sensor since it is usually the first to go. No more light and the truck runs just fine. I should replace the rear here soon though. Autozone sells Bosch, and run about the same price as the few others that make em.
I wouldn't pull the cat out, the back pressure it creates gives the avg engine more power. But if you turbo it or super it, then you don't want it.

I have to buy a TPS too, my cruise control was acting up and I suspect that is failing now.

Message: No, its generally easy, depends on how long they have been in...they can get quite stuck, but a good box wrench on then will make them let go.
Removing the cat is illegal most anywhere I think.
We have emissions testing here in Ga and would never get by without a cat.

Message: Don'tknow if you all have seen them, but they make special sockets for O2 sensors. Its a deep well with a cut up the side for the wire. I know snap on makes them, and probably every other manufacturer as well. I would check craftsman for an inexpensive socket. It tends to be a little easier than with a wrench.

Joe, yes, it is our Atlanta population that brings us the emissions test, but it is still illegal to remove your cat anywhere in Florida, its FEDERAL law, but you know your risk better than me.

Message: I lived in the panhandle of FL for a little hile (lower Alabama for some) and we didn't have emissions. Reguardless, it is a Federal Law about the cat, if the car came that way from the factory, then it HAS TO HAVE the same emissions itmes on it. PCV, EGR, whatever. My whole point was that if the avg person removes the cat, they will loose power unless they are running turbos or supers.
As far as the O2 removal. I've used a box end wrench in the past. It works well, and easy to use a hammer on.

Message: Boomer, explain the loss of power after removing the cat thing to me. I have always heard that cats. are really restrictive on old Dakotas. It you free up your exhaust, so it can move "funky" air out of the engine quicker, how will that make yo loose power? Please explain this one to me. Thanks for the help.
About the law thing, in my small town, it is common to see vehicals with no bumpers due to off road angle problems. We also have many, including my truck, with way to dark tint. Also, light covers that are not suppost to be used in street driven cars. You can even get a "get outa jail free card" if you know a sheriff dep. Our law enforcement is a good dept but they worry about more drastic problems and let drivers do what they want to their trucks/cars. Of course we must drive in a safe manner! Thats rural s. Florida for you. Will never go to restriction heaven Cali.
Have a good one all of you!

Message: joe, where do you live? maybary?
by removing the cat you will lose backpressure...it would be like going from the stock 2 1/2" exhaust to a 4 1/2" it would be too free flowing and you would loose torque (the stuff that gets you moving). if you did a lot of intake work (50mm TB, M1 intake, heads, supercharger, ect) you would benifit from removing the cat. but just with just minor boltons a high flow cat would be cool.

Message: I have a question and I hope it isn't a dumb one.... could letting your fuel level get low cause the junk in the bottom of the tank to be processed, thus stinking up the cat? I know I've been guilty of that a couple of times, with the fluctuating prices of gas up here (one day 63¢, the next 79¢ or 80¢) sometimes I wait longer than I know I should.

Message: No leaded gas in Canada anywhere illegal. But I sincerly doubt that running the tank empty would do anything to your cat. There is a filter sock right before the pump and a filter right after the pump as well so I don't think any junk would get through. I do it all the time as well .78c/l here at the moment. Never had a cat problem.

just a vague possibility.

Message: I just got a reply from Daimler Chrysler to my recurring cat complaints:
Dear Ms. Wimbush:
We are sorry to learn of the catalytic converter condition currently affecting
your 1997 Dodge Dakota.
Any component can be subject to a defect, and often times, failure is an
isolated incident that is not indicative of a part design problem.
DaimlerChrysler routinely analyses failed parts to develop product improvements
in response to data received from dealers and the warranty system. No evidence
currently exists to suggest a quality problem with the catalytic converter of
the 1997 Dodge Dakota model vehicle.
Thank you for sharing your concerns with us.

I phoned the dealership (again) and they insisted that the 02 sensor must be okay otherwise the check engine light would come on. They asked me to bring it in so they could check out the odor... but it wouldn't be under warranty. So..... I guess I will just go ahead with the sensor replacement.
