Eric,
From my experience the one before the cat usually goes out first because the cat helps process most of the toxins thus making it easier on the second. And to most of you that require cats...have you ever thought of taking your stock cat off and taking a 10" extension and hammer and holowing the guts out of it? This would give you the apperance of a cat but actually you will have a cat-back with muffler?
Later,
Josh

Message: Josh, you can hammer it out but it sure changes the emissions readings, so I could not pass the emissions test that we have here in Atlanta..which sucks by the way. We have had it for 5 years and it has not improved our air quality by one part per million..its rediculous, just another tax. The emissions test was pushed by the New Car Dealers Assn...figures, they want to spur new car sales, it had nothing to do with air quality anyway...what a joke.

Message: Here in Ontario you have to pass an emissions test before you get your sticker (do you guys have stickers down there - you know, to update your license plate yearly?). It being an odd-numbered year, odd-numbered vehicles get tested... mine's a 97 so it gets tested this December. You'd better believe I would take great pleasure in knocking the stuffing out of my cat... but it's a necessary evil. :)

Message: Yes, I lived in Florida in the 70s when the State had all these stupid inspection stations that took all day to get through. They supposedly checked your tires, lights, ball joints, etc. Some of the cars that got through were an absolute joke. Florida finally did away with them.

Message: I had the check engine light on my 98 Dakota, 2.5L. The code is P0138 "O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 2)" I replaced the Sensor before the Cat and cleared the codes. Then the light came back on and I still have the same code. Does anyone have any recomendations other than see the dealer?

Message: I own a 1997 Dodge Dakota Sport Club Cab with the 5.2L V8... I have a bad rattling in my Cat, so I assume that its toast. But readin the messages here, you are saying it is not a good idea to remove it completely? (Not for the law, but for loss of power) This is my second cat, and no longer warrantied. I always heard that removing a cat would give you more HP, is this so for my truck? Or am I better off to get a new cat? They want $300 Canadian around here + install of a new one. I can have it removed for $30-50. Please help, the rattling is driving me insane.
