Subject: steering thump on accel and brake IP: Logged
Message: ok guys ive been trying to figure this one out. on hard accel or braking when im about to stop i feel a pretty bad thump in my steering wheel. (started about 3 weeks ago) and its driving me nuts.
the suspension is tight
even had my hand in the steering shaft by your feet to try to feel and i dont feel anything. only in the steering wheel and you can hear it a little.
also had someone drive up and back the driveway as i looked under the hood and felt the gearbox. = nothing, can only feel it in the wheel.
tie rods ball joints all good.
any sudgestions? thanks everybody

Message: what you're describing sounds like control arm bushings.

Message: nope ball joints are good i shook down the wheels myself... twice.
ive been doing some reserch on this and on a ford forum somebody was describing the same thing and it was caused by a slip yok being regreased.
same on a saab forum i found. that was caused by the colapsable steering colum being greased.
i did the steering colum grese but no difference.
how would one check the upper ball joint bushings? besides visual?

Message: jack up one of the front wheels under the lower control arm. then while watching or someone else watching, grab the tire at the 9 oclock and 3 oclock positions and try to move it left to right. if there is any slop at all in the upper bushings you'll see the upper control arm move slightly. it may barely move but if it moves at all you'll need to change them.

Message: i did that too. no play. but ill give it another try. side to side. maybe i missed something.
this thump is rely bad. i feel like its going to break something soon in the steering colum. the only way i can regulate it is accelerating like a old grandma and then it wont do it.
so yes it does lead me to believe it has to be something that travels in the suspension as the vehicle increases torqe. the front end lifts a little. vise versa braking.
its just wierd, i only feel it in the steering wheel.
thank you guys for the posts.

Message: control arm bushings will do exactly as you described with the braking and taking off. i've seen it a few times. especially on 2wd vehicles. but the 4x4 IFS should be pretty much the same.

Message: brian, i was just thinking, you might need to jack the front up by the frame and not under the control arm. jacking under the control arm would tend to hold that lower arm in place.

Message: I think it is your intermediate shaft. I have replaced all of my control arm bushings, upper and lower, and my truck still does it.
Try taking your intermediate shaft out, and greasing the inside.

Message: ok sorry it tok a while to respond. i got a second car so my dak is rec. use only (gas prices) so. i did check the bushings and there all tight. but as i have driven it today and a few days ago i couldnt get the truck to do it again.
the only thing that i could think of is that i did adjust the steering box. (my steering wheel was relly sloppy. but it feels so much better now) and i did grease the proper pionts in the steering shaft. no i did not take out the shaft but maybe it was good enough to solve the problem?
well i plan on driving the dakota all weekend and ill let you guys know if it comes back.
thanks for all the help.
hopefully this is it.

Message: ok sorry its been a while. yesterday i lubed up my steeringshaft and it was still thumping then i decided to take the plastic cover off by the blinker control, wiper ect. to check it all out.
then about 20 min later of driving the thump went completely away. no matter how hard i punch it or slam on the brakes i cant get it to do it again.
so it was either the lube. or i must of did something when i took of the cover. i dont know, im just glad its gone.
well i just wanted to let you all know, i will let you guys know if it comes back. thanks for all the help.
