It's not rocket science, fortunatly. If I can do it, so can you.
1. Remove everything blocking the cover.
2. Remove the cover.
3. Wipe out the inside, and check for damage.
4. Clean the cover, and the moutning surface.
5. Apply sealant, put the cover back on, and let it dry.
-- Sometimes getting the cover aligned and the bolts started without messing up the goo is difficult. Get two 1" bolts of the same size as the cover bolts. IIRC, they're metric (maybe). Cut the heads off, and cut a screwdriver slot in the end. Use them as guide pins to put the cover on.
6. Refill with oil.
-- This can be a pain if you don't have a pump. There's a vent tube on my '01 that ends up near the battery. I used that to fill the case.
7. Put all the stuff back that you removed in step 1.
