Message: if its not the gage or sending unit it sounds like your tstat is stuck open. you may want to check for codes. it will throw one for "Engine too cold for too long" and not trip the CEL. ask me how i know.
your mileage could be down too.

Message: ya i checked the codes and it said p-1281 which is engine too cold too long. so i ended up getting the thermostate replaced. when i brought it up there they said they hooked up a scanner to the engine and it was showing it running 180-190 which is normal. i told them to go ahead and replace it anyway. i get it back and the gauge in the truck is still showing 150-160 but it hasnt tripped a code yet. any idea if its something else or whats wrong with it?
thanks

Message: Could also be the coolant temperature sensor. It is right next to the thermostat on the manifold. When I put in my 180 degree thermostat I saw the top part of the temp sensor that holds the element was broken. New one only cost about $15.00.

Message: I don't know whether it can cause incorrect temp gauge readings, but the plastic housing on mine was broken clean in two so I replaced it. My temp gauge was and still is working fine, though.
