Subject: This might be a stupid question... IP: Logged
Message: I seriously looked for a good 20 minutes to find the pre-cat
oxygen sensor on my '97 5.2 today, and I have no clue where the
hell it is. Anybody actually know where the pre-cat oxygen sensor
on the 5.2 is?
Thanks

Message: Hmm. Okay then, I'll look again and I might have just overlooked
it/them or something. Because the the sensor after the cat is
obvious. Thanks for the tips on where it might be though.
Appreciate it... when it's not sarcastic =P lol.

Message: Hey RadioMan, do you know what "Pre" means?
It's the post-cat sensors that are the late arrivals to the show, appearing in 1996, and are part of the OBDII requirements.

Message: Okay, Now I'm confused of what to get from this. So there are NO pre-cat sensors or there are? Because when I looked up parts on autozone.com they do have pre-cat sensors listed on the website as a part for the '97. Or are they just stupid? Cause I still need to find the time up here in San Francisco to get under/into my truck to actually look for it. (basically when I have the ability to get into my driveway without pissing the neighbors off =P)

Message: NO, THERE ARE pre-cat O2s and you should also have an O2 downstream of the cat.
Unless the previous owner(if there was one) modified the emmissions.

Message: In other words, there have always been pre-cat (before the catcon) sensors since there have been O2 sensors. In approximately the mid-1990s, after-cat sensors were added to compare the readings to the pre-cat, to tell if the catcon is really working. If it is, the after-cat ones sense a leaner exhaust.
Pre-cat should be either in the exhaust manifold itself, or more likely, in the Y-pipe before the catcon.

Message: Alright alright, I had the chance to look today and I did find it
about a foot in front of the cat. However, it is very possible that it
is in the most annoying place to get to it. Its like crooked at a 45
degree angle and right above part of the transmission mount. So I
would have to break my arm just to get in there. Oh well. Just
kinda annoying. =P

Message:
All vehicles manufactured for sale in the USA beginning with model year 1996 (there were exceptions, of course) were required to comply with government-mandated OBDII emissions monitoring standards.
Those standards required two O2 sensors in the exhaust stream of each bank of cylinders. One would be between the catalytic converter and the engine, to monitor combustion efficiency and adjust the air/fuel mixture to maintain a certain (very low) oxygen level in the exhaust. The other would be downstream of the catalytic converter to measure the efficiency of the converter, by measuring and comparing the oxygen level of the exhaust stream before and after the converter.
So. It follows that if your vehicle is a 1997, it would have an O2 sensor before and after the catalytic converter.
Now you know.
Oh. for those who don't know, our government has also mandated Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) be required in all model year 2008 and later vehicles. You can all thank the Ford Explorer/Firestone Tire lawsuits of a few years back for that troublesome system.
Also, the trend to Electronic Throttle Control (ECT) isn't for no reason: our government has also mandated stability control be standard on all vehicles in a couple years, which requires a computer-controlled throttle.
Now you know more.

Message: I already knew there were two from the get go,I just didn't know
where the it was located "exactly," lol. But yeah, the tire pressure
thing to me is an okay idea, but the ECT still sounds iffy to me.
This is simply because what if your computer somehow goes out on
the highway. Hopefully there is still an analog form of throttle
hooked up with it in case that happens...
