Subject: 5 Speed popping out of gear IP: Logged
Message: All:
I have an 05 Dakota V8 4wd QC. I've had an intermittent issue with the transmission popping out of gear for no reason. Typically it happens when cold but occasionally when warm. In my case, I have a long driveway on a slight downgrade so when I put it in reverse out of the garage, I give it a bit of gas and then coast most of the way until the driveway rises right at the road. At that point when I give it more gas I find it's out of gear yet the indicator says I'm still in reverse (or drive). It then pops into gear (sometimes quite dramatically) and is fine from there. A couple of times this happened and the pop back into gear triggered the check engine light. Last summer one dealer replaced the txsn valve body under warranty but that didn't relieve the problem. I've had it in 5 times now and no dealer will do anything since they can't get it to repeat the problem. It almost feels like there isn't enough fluid in the torque converter yet the fluid level is perfectly fine. It does, however, seem to happen after I've used the 4wd. Thoughts? Transfer case? I've only got 17000km left on the warranty so I want to get this fixed before it runs out as I'm sure it will be a fight to get it fixed after the 100,000km expires even though I started addressing this at only 58,000km.

That happens with my first gear in my truck intermittantly when I pull away fast putting high load on it.
I assume it to be a chipped tooth in my first gear the way it slips out with a big 'clunk' and the way it is intermittant, like it only does it when the bad tooth is meshed with the output gear,
but that is only an assumption, I don't know if that is what the cause is.

Message: Thanks for the replies... yes I do have the 5 speed automatic. When it "pops" out of gear it's a subtle thing. I put it into gear (drive or reverse), give it a little gas to get going, coast for a while and when I go to give it some more gas it's simply not in gear anymore. For all intents and purposes, at that point it's in neutral (although it still says it's in drive or reverse and the shift lever hasn't moved at all). When I do give it more gas it goes back into gear with quite a jerk.

Oh. Mine's a standard.
Sounds like a problem with the load sensors in the tranny. Did you check your oil level?
