first thing to do would be to put set of gages on it and check the charge.

Yep. If the charge isn't right, the clutch won't engage.

i was trying to charge the system at the time ...the first couple of times i tried the clutch would not even attempt to engage, then on the third try it would cycle in short bursts and was taking a charge. the freon had a gage on the can and it would go up to 40-45 then the clutch would engage and it would drop to 15... did this for 5minutes or so and everything seemed fine. the clutch would stay engaged for longer periods of time as i added more freon. then about an hour later i tried turning on the a/c and the clutch wouldn't try engaging at all... absolutely nothing even if the charge was low it still should try cycling ??? right???

You need to measure both high and low side pressure. Otherwise you're working blind and may damage the system and hurt yourself. And no, if the charge is low enough, it will not cycle at all. Not to be rude, but you should read up on A/C more before working with it. www.aircondition.com has great info on automotive A/C.

sounds like you have a pretty bad leak. but follow bob's advice and read up or pay someone to do it. and by no means use any of that leak stop crap in the system.
