 Subject: 4wd stalling?

i have a 97 dakota V8 5.2L 318 and i have noticed that it will stall a lot on the trail when i put it into 4wheeldrive, and it happens when i am going back and fourth through drive and reverse randomly as soon as it slips into gear it shuts down and it's an automatic!. so any thoughts on this? thanks

the lockup in the converter is probably shot.

so what would that consist of fixing lol a whole new torque converter, thanks for the info
