Subject: bad wheel bearing

Message:
yesterday i was driving down a dirt road and i heared a clunk. when i got home i was looking around for the clunk and i found it by shaking the wheel. if i put both my hands on the top of the rear wheel and rock back and forth there is a clunk coming from some where by the drum. is this the bearing or a brake component?

Are you rocking back and forth (implying forward and rearward), or in a side-to-side direction?

i am facing the truck rocking towards it then away from it, so the wheel is moving in a side to side type of movement not front and back. and I forgot to mention that sometimes(depending on what posistion of the tires rotation) it doesnt make any noise at all. in othe words if i move my truck forward depending on how far i go it wont make any noise.

Can a bad wheel bearing cause steering problems that can fool you into thinking it's an allignment problem?

as an update i took both rear wheels and drums it isnt a brake issue. but i did notice that there is play in the axles, it is an in and out movement of the axle shafts, they move about an eighth on an inch. and u dave, if it was a bad wheel bearing in the front im guessing there could be some symptons that would be the same as an allignment.
